Case Summary

In Jargawan village, Barabanki district, Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit Hindu man, Ram Kumar, was brutally beaten by a group of Muslims after he demanded monetary compensation from the main accused, Monis, for the road rage collision. Ram Kumar was on his way to drop an acquaintance at Sarai Salim crossroads when a collision occurred near the home of Kaushar Miya. Monis, a Muslim man, crashed into Ram Kumar’s bike, causing damage. When Ram Kumar demanded compensation for the loss, he was brutally attacked with sticks by several Muslims. His father, Polraj, was also present at the scene. The Muslim assailants chased Polraj and Ram for about 200 metres. Hearing the commotion, more than a dozen people from both Hindu and Muslim communities gathered at the Panchayat Bhawan Mela Maidan. Upon receiving information, Alok Mani Tripathi, the officer in charge of Ansadra police station, arrived with a police force, brought the situation under control, and detained several individuals. Based on Polraj’s complaint, a case was registered against 17 Muslims, including Monis, Maqbool, Khaliq, Sharif, Khan Arif, and Saddam, under various sections of the BNS and the SC/ST Act. The sections applied include 281, 125(a), 125(b), 324(4), 3(5), 115(2), 352, and 351(3) of the IPC, as well as 3(1)(da), 3(1)(g), and 3(2)(va) of the SC/ST Act. DSP Ramsanehi Ghat began investigating the matter. The police were successful in maintaining a law and order situation, and normalcy was restored in the village.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been placed in the Undecided category, as the currently available evidence does not conclusively establish a communal or hate-driven motive, despite several factors raising serious suspicion. The incident began as a road rage dispute in Jargawan village, Barabanki, where a Dalit Hindu man, Ram Kumar, was brutally assaulted by a group of Muslims after he demanded compensation from Monis, the primary accused, for damage caused by a collision. Ram’s father, Polraj, was also present and chased during the attack. The violence escalated quickly, prompting large gatherings from both communities and requiring police intervention to restore order. While the immediate cause appears to be a monetary dispute, the collective and disproportionate nature of the assault, involving 17 Muslim men, including known individuals from the locality, raises serious concerns. Importantly, this incident fits into a broader and well-documented pattern of aggression against Hindus by Muslim groups, where seemingly minor altercations escalate into large-scale assaults. This historical context strengthens the suspicion that the attack may not have been entirely spontaneous or isolated. However, despite these red flags, no communal slogans, religious slurs, or overt hate-driven statements have been reported so far. Without such direct evidence, and with the case still under police investigation, it would be premature to label the incident definitively as a hate crime. Therefore, the case is being documented in the Undecided category. Should proof of communal intent or hate-driven motivation come to light, it will be reclassified under the Hate Crime Database.
