Case Summary

In Asansol, West Bengal, a 16-year-old Hindu boy took his own life after suffering relentless blackmail by a Muslim man identified as Imran Sheikh. Imran used obscene photographs of the victim to extort money and subjected him to grave psychological pressure, resulting in his suicide. The victim was a ninth-grade student at Asansol Ramakrishna Mission. Imran abducted him in his car, drugged him, removed his clothes, and took indecent photographs of him. Imran stored these images on his mobile phone and subsequently used them to blackmail the victim, threatening to publish them unless he paid him money. When the victim stated that he had no more money to give, the pressure intensified. Unable to bear the harassment, the victim hanged himself on 29 May 2025. Initially, the victim's family believed he had died by suicide. However, after speaking to his friends and examining his mobile phone, they discovered that Imran had been blackmailing Sudeep. His Instagram chats with Imran and his phone call records made everything clear. The family then said that severe mental distress caused by the blackmail led to the suicide. Following these revelations, the victim's mother filed a complaint against Imran at the Asansol North Police Station. Police registered a case and launched an investigation into this matter.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

There is a strong suspicion in this case that the Muslim man targeted the minor Hindu boy because of his religious identity. Several documented incidents have involved perpetrators from the Muslim community committing similar acts, often motivated by religious animosity and influenced by the Islamic theology that dehumanises Hindus. The pattern of drugging, abducting, and photographing the minor in compromising situations suggests a premeditated attack driven by hostility towards the victim’s faith. In many such cases, Muslim extremists commit such crimes due to their deeply held hatred and disdain towards Hindus, sometimes advocating for their subjugation and exploitation. However, based on the available information, it is not possible to state conclusively that there was a religious motive; any such claim would remain speculative. Additionally, the victim’s family has not made any statement to that effect. For these reasons, the case is being added to the ‘Undecided’ database. If any further evidence emerges indicating that the crime was religiously motivated, then the case will be moved to the hate crime database. Disclaimer: It is important to note that the report does not specify the exact date on which the victim’s ordeal began. However, it states that the victim died by suicide on 29th May 2025. Therefore, this date is being used as the incident date for documentation purposes.
