Minor Hindu girl harrassed and given death threats for religious conversion and Nikah
Case Summary
In Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a 16-year-old Hindu girl named Amayra Thakur was continuously harassed, threatened, and pressured to convert to Islam by a Muslim youth named Altamash, a resident of Chamanganj. The victim released a video on social media describing her ordeal. She stated that a Muslim youth named Altamash had been harassing her for several days, demanding that she convert to Islam and do Nikah with him. He also gave her death threats, saying, "You should convert to Islam. This will be better for you. Otherwise, I will kill you and your family members. I will fire so many bullets and bombs in your house at night that the whole house will be destroyed." The victim also stated that he harassed her in public places, twisted her arm, and created disturbances outside her home. When she threatened to report the matter to the police, he responded defiantly, asserting that no one could touch him or do anything to him. As of the date of writing this report, a case was registered by the police based on the complaint filed by the victim's brother-in-law. The investigation was ongoing, and efforts were underway to nab the accused, who was absconding.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Predatory proselytisation. Within it, the sub-category selected is: - Harassment, threats, coercion for conversion. Harassment covers a wide range of behaviours of an offensive nature. It is commonly understood as behaviour that demeans, humiliates, and intimidates a person, including threats and coercion. Harassment and threats, in this case, find their root on discriminatory grounds which has the effect of nullifying a person’s rights or infringing upon his freedom to exercise his right specifically owing to the victim’s religious identity. Verbal and physical threats and psychological or physical harassment are often used against Hindu victims because they choose to practice their professed religion. Religious harassment also includes forced and involuntary conversions by harassment, threats or coercion. Coercion includes intimidatory tactics like force-feeding a Hindu victim beef to convert to another religion, forceful circumcision etc. In several cases documented, non-Hindu perpetrators or those who harbour specific animosity towards Hinduism, harass victims simply based on their religious identity. Such cases often also include harassment to ensure the Hindu victim abandons his/her professed religion and adopts the religion of the perpetrator. Such cases where Hindu victims are harassed to convert to the perpetrator’s religion are rooted in animosity towards the victim’s religious identity and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because a minor Hindu girl was threatened and given death threats by a Muslim youth for the purpose of religious conversion and Nikah. The fact that Altamash was willing to go to the extent of bombing the house and killing her entire family just to force a religious conversion shows not only his malicious intent but also jihadi mindset. This case exemplifies a form of religiously motivated hate crime where the conversion of the non-believer is seen as not only desirable but religiously mandated. The perpetrator’s core objective was not personal but ideological, he wanted to convert the minor Hindu to Islam. Threatening extreme violence like mass murder and bomb blasts is not an act of desperation, but a calculated move to terrorise a Hindu minor into submission. This stems from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Thus, in this context, in the eyes of the accused, coercion is not a crime—it becomes a “service” to his faith. His threats weren’t empty, they reflected an ideology that sees such coercion not just as permissible, but justified. That is why he was so confident nothing would happen to him. It is also important to mention that since the victim, in this case, is a minor, there was an absence of both consent and a genuine change of conscience. It is a well-established fact that children are more susceptible to manipulation since they are still developing emotionally, cognitively, and socially. Their brains are not fully mature, making them more vulnerable to influence and less capable of critically evaluating information. Moreover, subtle manipulation tactics can be difficult to detect, making it challenging for parents to identify and address instances of religious manipulation. Consequently, cases involving religious manipulation of minors not only represent an infringement on an individual's religious freedom but also demonstrate a calculated strategy of targeting those who are less able to resist or understand the long-term implications of conversion, making it a significant case of religious-motivated hate crime. To sum it up, this Hindu girl was subjected to repeated harassment, violent threats, and attempts at religious coercion. This was not an isolated act of individual misconduct but part of a broader pattern of doctrinally driven hate where conversion is weaponised against Hindu victims as a form of religious warfare. Since the violence, threats, and coercive pressure stem from religious animosity and aim at erasing the victim's faith, this case has rightly been documented as a religiously motivated hate crime.
