Hindu woman targeted for religious conversion and sexual abuse by Muslim posing as Hindu

Case Summary
In Nashik, a Hindu girl was abducted, raped and coerced for religious conversion by a Muslim man named Mohammad Uzair Alam. Alam had posed as a Hindu to trap the victim. It all started in 2013, when Mohammad Uzair Alam, aged 37, lured a Hindu girl from Delhi to Nashik under the false pretext of offering her a job. He pretended to be a Hindu man named Raju and lured her into a love trap, after which both started living in Shramiknagar. Uzair emotionally blackmailed the girl by saying he was an orphan and sexually exploited the Hindu girl on the false promise of marriage. In 2016, when the girl became pregnant, Uzair's true identity, as a Muslim, was revealed. She also discovered that he was not an orphan and had a brother and a mother. However, since she could not return home, she remained with him silently and endured the injustice and abuse. After Uzair's true identity was revealed, he started opposing the girl from worshipping according to the faith. He pressured her to adopt Islamic customs and forced her to wear a burkha in public. He also threatened to beat her and throw her out of the house if she did not comply. This caught the attention of local youths, who then informed the police and rescued the girl. As of the date of writing this report, a case was registered by the police, and the investigation was ongoing.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of: - Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within it, the first sub-category selected is: - Man pretends to be Hindu, with the tertiary category being: - Name changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The other sub-category selected here is: - Forced conversion before marriage, with the tertiary category being: - Forced to wear hijab. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The third sub-category category selected here is: - Assault or threat upon refusal to convert When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. The second primary category selected here is: - Predatory proselytisation. Within it, the sub-category selected is: - Attempting to convert/converting by denigrating Hinduism. In several cases, Hindus are converted or an attempt is made to convert Hindus by denigrating their faith, Hinduism. In such cases, the Hindus associate with the non-Hindu perpetrators often by choice and then, the attempt to convert them by insulting their faith, showing the faith down etc begins. An example of this would be a non-Hindu gathering where the Hindus are attending the gathering of their own free will. However, once they attend the gathering, there is an explicit attempt to convert them by abusing their faith and hailing the faith of the perpetrator. The denigration of the Hindu faith is often based on misrepresentation of the Hindu faith, its doctrine and scriptures and insult to espoused traditions if not blatant lies about Hindu beliefs and ways. Such conversions or attempts at conversions are driven by animosity towards the Hindu faith and are therefore documented as religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu woman was lured into a relationship by a Muslim man, who posed as a Hindu, for religious conversion. He emotionally blackmailed her by saying he was an orphan and sexually exploited her on the false promise of marriage. The religious motive of the crime is evident from the fact that the Muslim perpetrator hid his true identity to trap the Hindu victim. This itself is a clear manifestation of bias and malicious intent towards the victim's religion. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. After learning the man’s true religious background, the woman faced pressure to convert to Islam. The accused forced her to wear a burkha in public and stopped her from worshipping according to Hindu customs. He even threatened her with violence if she refused to comply. He targeted her Hindu beliefs, aimed at alienating her from her Hindu identity and making her accept Islam. This coercion directly infringed upon her religious freedom, stripping her of the right to practice her own faith and maintain her religious identity. The use of force in converting her demonstrates an attempt to erase her Hindu identity and impose Islamic practices upon her. This incident is not an isolated case but part of a broader pattern where Hindu women are deliberately targeted through deception and emotional blackmail for religious conversion and sexual exploitation. This stems from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents. The accused here, specifically targeted the victim because of her Hindu faith and manipulated her into a relationship by pretending to share the victim's faith, raped her, and then pressured her to convert to Islam. He restrained the victim from worshipping and compelled her to follow Islamic principles. Given these elements, the case has been classified as a religiously motivated hate crime, driven by the accused's animosity towards the Hindu faith. Disclaimer: Media reports state that the victim's ordeal began when she met the accused in 2013, though no exact date or month is provided. To document this case, we have used an indicative date—January 1, 2013—as a placeholder to represent the beginning of her suffering. While media coverage of the incident emerged on June 5, 2025, the Hinduphobia Tracker records the incident based on when the victim’s ordeal began, not when it was reported.
