Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case is being added to the tracker under the primary category- Hate Speech against Hindus. The subcategory selected is- Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case is a clear instance of a religiously motivated hate speech as the accused Archana Singh Bauddh made derogatory remarks against Hindu gods and goddesses during a Buddhist katha event. It is first important to highlight that Hindu gods and goddesses hold a very important place in Hinduism; they embody profound theological, cultural, and spiritual significance, representing cosmic orders like righteousness, karma, and devotion. They serve as archetypes of moral guidance, protection, prosperity, and ultimate liberation. For Hindu devotees, any act of denigrating Hindu gods and goddesses in this derogatory manner amounts to a clear instance of a religiously motivated crime. The accused's actions in this case, abusing Hindu gods and goddesses, showcase how much hatred she harboured towards Hinduism and the Hindu community. Such acts are deliberately designed to wound the religious sentiments of the Hindu community, unequivocally marking them as a religiously motivated crime. This incident occurred during a Buddhist katha event, exposing how religious gatherings are exploited as pretexts to abuse Hindu gods and goddesses and flaunt anti-Hindu animosity. It unequivocally demonstrates the accused's intent to denigrate Hinduism and proclaim Buddhism's superiority over it. Such acts stem from deep-seated religious animosity toward the Hindu community and its faith, marking this as a blatant, religiously motivated hate crime. As this case squarely meets the criteria for a religiously motivated offence, it has been added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: Although the main accused in this case, Archana Singh Bodh, launched abusive remarks against Hindu gods and goddesses during the Buddhist katha event, the event organiser acted as her accomplice by facilitating the platform for such hate speech. Henceforth, both are considered perpetrators, and the perpetrator count is recorded as '2' in the Hinduphobia Tracker database.
