Case Summary

A derogatory, abusive remark against Hindus was made by a Muslim 'journalist' named Talha Hussain Gulbargavi. The accused called Hindus 'bastards' over condemning the brutal lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man who was mob lynched by a Muslim mob in Bangladesh over an unproven allegation of blasphemy. This began when CNN-News18 journalist Rahul Shivshankar made a post on his official X handle condemning the brutal lynching of Dipu Chandra Das. He wrote: "ISLAMIC EMIRATE OF BANGLADESH! Hindu lynched in Bangladesh no collective grieving. But Radical Islamist leader fuelling a bigoted outlook, accorded state funeral and 'martyr' status. 'DIRECT ACTION DAY' mentality dawning on our Eastern border." To this, the accused, Talha Hussain, a journalist from Gulbarga, Karnataka, abused Hindus by posting a quote tweet stating, "Why are Hindu rashtra bastards crying over it??" Previously, the Hinduphobia Tracker reported on the brutal murder of Dipu Chandra Das. In Bhaluka town of Mymensingh district, Bangladesh, Dipu Chandra Das was targeted and brutally lynched to death by a Muslim mob amidst false allegations of blasphemy against him. The Muslim mob chanted religious slogans, including “Nara ae Takbir Allahu Akbar,” while recording the assault on their mobile phones. Dipu Chandra Das was beaten to death on the night of 18 December 2025. The Muslim mob accused him of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad. After killing him, the Muslim mob tied his body with a rope to a tree and set it on fire.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Hate Speech against Hindus. The subcategory selected is- Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. This case stands as a stark example of anti-Hindu hate speech, where Muslim journalist Talha Hussain Gulbargavi viciously abused Hindus by calling them 'bastards' simply for condemning the brutal mob lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a defenceless Hindu man, slaughtered by a Muslim mob in Bangladesh over an unproven blasphemy allegation. Talha Hussain's toxic outburst targeted an entire community mourning one of their own, exposing his religious animosity as he weaponised slurs to silence Hindu voices raising alarm over the persecution of Hindus. By dismissing legitimate grief with such dehumanising language, he did not just insult individuals but assaulted the Hindu collective identity, revealing a motive steeped in religious hatred that punishes Hindus for demanding justice. This was no offhand remark; it was deliberate provocation, amplifying the trauma of Dipu Chandra Das's family and the Hindu community while endorsing the impunity of his killers through such a vile rhetoric. Talha Hussain's attack on the 'Hindu Rashtra' concept further cements this as anti-Hindu hate speech driven by profound religious bigotry, as he twisted a benign idea of a Hindu nation-state into a slur to vilify all Hindus as illegitimate 'bastards'. Here, 'Hindu Rashtra' served as a euphemism, a dog-whistle, to broadly target and degrade Hindus, conflating their aspirations for self-preservation with imagined threats, all while they grieved the lynching of a Hindu man. The Muslim accused's abuse demonstrates indirect endorsement of radical Islamic extremists who perpetrated Dipu Chandra Das's murder, as he scorned Hindus for opposing such savagery rather than standing with the victim. This act underscores deep-seated loathing for the Hindu faith and resilience, marking his words as religiously motivated hate speech. A Hindu Rashtra, far from the caricature Talha Hussain peddled, embodies Hinduism's inclusive ethos, a nation-state for Hindus that welcomes all, mirroring the tolerance historically extended to non-Hindus under Hindu monarchies, where minorities thrived without the forced conversions or pogroms seen under Islamic rule in India. Yet Talha Hussain spat on this reality, abusing the term to fuel animosity against Hindus merely for decrying their kin's slaughter by Muslim extremists. His rhetoric humanises no one but emboldens the Muslim attackers, punishing Hindus for remembering their history of harmony. By maligning this tolerant vision, he exposed his visceral hatred for Hindu existence itself, rendering his outburst a textbook case of anti-Hindu hate speech propelled by religious intolerance. Given that this case meets the parameters of an anti-Hindu hate crime, it is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
