Hindu man murdered by intoxicated Muslim friends over a minor scuffle in Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
A Hindu man named Mahendra Jatav was murdered with bricks and stones in Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh, on 16 December 2025, over a dispute with his friends Altaf, Raja, and Zeeshan during a drinking party. Mahendra was taken from home by his friends Zeeshan, Raja, and Altaf for a drinking party. During the party, an argument escalated to the point where the three muslim men attacked Mahendra with bricks and stones, resulting into this death. The deceased's brother, Deepak Jatav, has filed a murder case against the accused. During the investigation, it was revealed by the Police that the murder occurred by hitting the victim multiple times on the head with a brick. Two of the suspects have been arrested, and a search is underway for the third absconding suspect.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the immediate cause of the crime appears to be non-religious, that is, a minor altercation, which escalated into a violent clash between friends, three muslims and one Dalit Hindu. What began as a minor exchange of arguments quickly escalated into a bloodthirsty murder. The violence resulted in the Hindu Dalit man losing his life. The intensity of the assault and the violence over such a minor issue raises concern about whether simmering religious tensions in the area or the underlying religious hostility could have contributed to this escalation. It is noteworthy that among the four friends, only one was Hindu, and he was the only one who became the victim in the entire case. Whether this was a planned union or not, cannot be ascertained, but it cannot be denied altogether. Taking a cue from the numerous documented instances that show Muslims targeting Hindus with hostility rooted in disdain for the Hindu community and faith only explains that this case cannot be denied the cover of a hate crime. These acts are rarely isolated instances of violence but rather stem from entrenched religious intolerance and animosity, fitting into a broader pattern of anti-Hindu hatred. Many communal attacks by Muslims against Hindus stem directly from such religious hatred, rendering this incident a strong candidate for hate crime classification. However, in this specific case, the available reports do not provide any concrete evidence of religious hatred as the motive. There is no mention of religious slurs, targeted attacks based on identity, or any indication that the violence was premeditated or directed at the victim because he was Hindu. The incident appears to have developed spontaneously from a local dispute, which then escalated due to the involvement, anger, and murder of the victim. Neither the police nor the victim’s family nor the media reports have suggested that the assault was driven by religious animosity. Therefore, this case is currently being added to the "Undecided" database. If any new evidence surfaces confirming religious animosity as a key factor, the case will be reclassified and added to the "Hate Crime Database" of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
