Case Summary

In Jalgaon, Maharashtra, unidentified individuals pelted a stone at the Taptiganga Express, which was en route to the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj from Surat. The incident occurred around 3:20 p.m. as the train was leaving Jalgaon station. A stone hit the window of coach B-6, shattering the glass between berths 33-39. Passengers, particularly in the AC coach, were alarmed by the loud crash but no injuries were reported. Passengers filmed the damage and shared videos online, urging railway authorities to improve security. An official confirmed that one suspect was identified, but had fled the scene. The Jalgaon Railway Protection Force (RPF) has initiated an investigation and registered a case. Following the attack, additional security measures were implemented along the train's route to ensure the safety of Maha Kumbh devotees. Speaking about the incident, RPF Inspector Gyaneshwar Patil said, "The incident should not be regarded as stone pelting. Train number 19045 down Surat-Chhapra Express arrived at 2:02 PM today on platform number 2. After the train departed at 2:17 PM, it travelled a short distance, approximately 16-17 coaches ahead from the platform. At that moment, a stone was thrown from the left side by an individual, hitting the window of the train."

Why it is Hate Crime ?

While there is a well-documented history of Hindu devotees being targeted while en route to religious events and/or places, the circumstances surrounding this particular incident are different. In this case, the perpetrators remain unidentified, and there is no definitive evidence linking the stone-pelting to any specific religious hostility. The attack involved only one stone being thrown, which struck a window, and there was no indication that the action was part of a coordinated or sustained assault aimed at religiously motivated violence. Due to the limited nature of the attack and lack of clear religious motive, the evidence does not meet the criteria for a hate crime. Hence, this case has been marked as "Undecided" pending further investigation.
