Case Summary

The mutilated body of a missing Hindu youth identified as Deepak Kumar was found in Faridabad. He had been missing since December 16, 2024. Deepak’s body was abandoned in the bushes near Sector 62, and as per reports, the body had been badly mutilated and was in a decomposed condition. Some fingers and toes were also missing. The brother of the deceased filed a complaint against some persons named Fakruddin, Idris, Anwar, Azad, Sohail, and others. He said that the accused had an enmity with Deepak because he was the main witness in a case involving the rape of a minor girl where the above persons were accused. The Hinduphobia tracker included the rape case in its database, highlighting how a Muslim youth named Sonu, who lived in the same building, called the girl to his flat and tried to molest her. Upon hearing her screams, the girl's mother rushed to Sonu's flat, but by then, the accused had fled. Later, Sonu, accompanied by his mother, brother Sahil, and 10-15 other boys from his community, confronted and attacked the victim's family. The attackers hurled caste-based slurs and issued death threats. Eyewitnesses reported that more Muslim men gradually joined the group, and eventually, a mob of around 100 individuals, led by a man named Fakruddin, gathered at the scene. Armed with sticks and bricks, they created chaos, attacking the victim's family and other Hindus present. Eyewitness testimonies were also documented, stating that the Muslim men targeted Hindus for opposing the heinous crime committed by Sonu. The tracker further noted how the mob, led by Fakruddin, attacked Hindu neighbours, including Deepak Kumar, and issued death threats.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category of- Attack resulting in death. Under this, the sub-category selected is- Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Under this category, cases where the attack led to the death of the Hindu victim/s would be documented. Hinduphobia Tracker had documented the initial crime of a Muslim perpetrator raping the minor and thereafter, a 100 strong Muslim mob attacking the victim's family, hurling identity-based slurs and abuses against the victim and the family. In such cases, it can be argued that a caste-specific slur is aimed at the victims' micro identity of belonging to the Dalit section of the Hindu community and not their Hindu identity itself. However, as far as Abrahamic religions are concerned, the micro identities of caste, region, and language are secondary. It is the religious identity that drives the animosity of the perpetrator against the Hindu victim. The case was, therefore, documented as a religiously motivated hate crime. In this case, which is a fall out of the initial case that Hinduphobia Tracker had documented, the Hindu man was hacked to death by a Muslim mob because he opposed the radicals and was a witness in the court against the perpetrators. This case is being added to the hate crime database because the initial crime was proved to be a religiously motivated one, given the testimony of the mother of the victim where she detailed in her complaint how the perpetrators and the 100 strong mob had not only attacked the family but also hurled identity based abuse at the family. With the religious motivations and animosity of the initial crime established, making the perpetrators radical Muslims harbouring animosity towards the victim and her family (as established by the identity slurs), the murder of Deepak, as a fallout of the initial religiously motivated crime, is also established as a crime by radical Muslims against a Hindu victim who was opposing their religiously motivated crime. For that reason, this case has been documented as a hate crime in the tracker.

Faridabad police has confirmed that Deepak was murdered by his friend - Karan.
Raised Dispute Explanation
On the 14th of January 2025, Faridabad police confirmed that they had solved the Deepak murder case, claiming that he had been hacked to death by his friend Karan. Deepak allegedly had an affair with Karan's first wife. Enraged by the relationship, Karan plotted the murder of Deepak. Hinduphobia Tracker spoke to the brother of the victim who confirmed that the police had indeed arrested Karan for the murder. According to him, Karan confessed to his crime - information that was provided to him by the police. Since the crime pertains to a personal dispute and no religious angle has been found upon investigation, which has not been disputed by the family of the victim, this dispute is being accepted and the case is being removed from the hate crime database.
