Hindu woman forcibly converted and married by Muslim man, abondoned after 9 years of marriage

Case Summary
A woman from Rajendra Nagar filed a report against her husband, Shan Mohammad, for forcibly converting her religion and marrying her nine years ago. She stated that after the marriage, she endured mental, physical, and financial harassment. The couple has an 8-year-old daughter. Despite the mistreatment, she stayed silent over the years. On December 23, Shan Mohammad reportedly eloped with another woman from the same locality, leaving Chandni distraught. She also said that her life and property were under threat and demanded action not only against her husband but also against individuals named Rizwan Mansoori, Asif, Rafiuddin, Arif, and Asfaq.

In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. In this instance, there is no specific element of the Muslim accused hiding his identity. In such cases, the woman, in all probability, is made to believe that her faith would not stand in the way of their relationship. Here too, taking the accused’s word for it, the Hindu woman may have entered into a romantic relationship with the Muslim man. When she was deeply involved in the relationship, the Muslim perpetrator forced her to convert her religion to Islam and then perform Nikah with him. After all of this, the accused, when lost interest in the woman, began mistreating her. He eventually abandoned her and their child and eloped with another woman. This case has been classified as a hate crime where manipulation was used since the Muslim male took advantage of the Hindu woman with the sole aim of alienating her from her professed faith.
