Hindu mother and two children brutally murdered by Muslim brothers in Balrampur, Chhattisgarh
Case Summary
In Balrampur, Chhattisgarh, Muslim men murdered a Hindu woman and her two children. The victims were Kaushalya Thakur (36), her daughter Muktavati alias Muskan Thakur, and her son Mintu Thakur (6). Mukhtar Ansari was in an illicit relationship with Kaushalya, while his younger brother Arif was involved with Muskan. When Muskan rejected Arif’s marriage proposal, he became convinced that she was seeing another man. Enraged, Arif and Mukhtar plotted to kill Muskan and her family. After Arif was arrested, the real motive emerged: Arif wanted revenge against Muskan for refusing to marry him, and both brothers decided to eliminate her along with her family. Mukhtar lured Muskan, her mother, and her younger brother into travelling with him. Arif joined them as well. After dinner, when the three victims were asleep, Arif stabbed Muskan. Together, Arif and Mukhtar killed Muskan, Kaushalya, and Mintu with an axe before dumping their bodies in a drain in a paddy field.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the immediate cause of the crime appears to be non-religious, that is, a personal dispute arising out of an illicit relationship and a rejected marriage proposal. However, the brutality of the murders — the killing of a Hindu mother and her two children by two Muslim men — raises serious concerns about whether deeper religious motives underpinned the violence. Across the country, there has been a repeated pattern of Hindu women being selectively targeted by Muslim men under the guise of relationships, often leading to religious exploitation, forced conversion, or, in cases of resistance, murder. The elimination of not just the Hindu woman but also her daughter and minor son indicates a disproportionate level of violence that could reflect deep-seated animosity towards the victims’ Hindu identity. However, as there are currently no explicit indicators of religious motivation in this case, nor has the police or the victim's family suggested such a motive, therefore, the case remains classified as ‘Undecided’. If further evidence emerges confirming that the murder was religiously motivated, the case will be reclassified accordingly within the hate crime database.
