Hindu man killed by Muslim woman and her brother for refusing marriage
Case Summary
A 24-year-old Hindu man, Kapil Choudhary's dead body was found in a homestay in Mussoorie. He was killed by his Muslim girlfriend, Kudrat Bano and her 18-year-old brother Abdulla for refusing to marry her. According to media reports, Kapil and Kudrat were in a relationship for the past two years and had decided to marry. But Kapil's family refused to let him marry a Muslim woman; therefore, Kapil wanted to end the relationship. Kudrat felt betrayed by this, and she, along with her brother Abdulla, planned to kill Kapil. They convinced Kapil to book a room at a homestay in Mussoorie. After having dinner, when Kapil fell asleep, Kudrat, along with her brother, slit Kapil's throat and killed him and then hid his body under the bed. Kudrat and Abdulla took Kapil's car and fled. The hotel staff found out Kapil's dead body and informed the police that Kudrat and Abdulla had gone missing along with Kapil's car. Kudrat and Abdulla were arrested by the police officials for planning and executing Kapil's murder. They both confessed to their crimes in police interrogations.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The murder of 24-year-old Kapil Choudhary in Mussoorie appears to have been primarily motivated by personal and relational factors rather than religious animosity. According to available reports, Kapil’s refusal to marry his girlfriend, Kudrat Bano, led to feelings of betrayal, prompting her and her brother Abdulla to plan and execute the murder. The act was targeted specifically at Kapil due to his personal decision, not as a broader attack on Hindus or the Hindu community. However, there are are multiple documented cases where Hindu boys in relationships with Muslim women have been attacked by their partner’s family members. In many of these instances, religious animosity is the primary motive, and victims are often pressured to convert to Islam, with refusal sometimes resulting in murder. In the present case, however, the available information suggests that a religious motive does not appear to be a factor. The available details do not provide clear evidence of religious motivation. At present, the primary motive appears to stem from personal obsession and emotional instability, more like a crime of passion than one driven by ideological or religious intent. For this reason, the case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that hints towards a religiously motivated crime, then it would be reclassified and included under the Hate Crime database.
