Hindu woman sexually exploited, pressured to convert to Islam, assaulted when she resisted

Case Summary
A young woman reported being sexually exploited and pressured to convert to Islam under the pretext of marriage. The victim filed a case against Syed Umar Yusuf and his parents at the Vibhutikhand police station. The police arrested Umar following the complaint. The victim, a resident of Vibhutikhand, stated that she met Umar, from Lalkuan, Hussainganj, two years ago. Umar lured her into a relationship, promising marriage without requiring her to change her religion. They began living together, but later, Umar started pressuring her to convert. When she resisted, he physically assaulted her and used objectionable videos and photos, which he had secretly recorded, to coerce her into unnatural acts. The ordeal left the victim deeply distressed, leading her to attempt suicide twice. She finally gathered the courage to approach the Vibhutikhand police in October. Umar’s parents, Syed Yusuf and Anam intervened and pressured her to drop the case. However, Umar resumed pressuring her to convert, prompting her to take legal action.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case is being added to the primary category 'Crimes against women in relationship and other sexual crimes' under two sub-categories. The first sub-category is 'Forced conversion before marriage'. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. The relationship in such cases is mostly consensual and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. In such cases, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The second sub-category is 'Assault or threat upon refusal to convert'. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. In this case the Hindu victim knew the Muslim man's identity. The Muslim man and the woman were in a relationship and the perpetrator had told the victim that she would not have to convert her religion when they marry. It can be said that the woman was involved in a relationship with the Muslim man on the premise that the relationship would not be affected owing to religious differences and she would be free to practice her professed faith. During the course of the relationship, the Muslim man started pressuring the Hindu woman to convert to Islam. When she refused to do so, she was threatened and assaulted. From the facts of the case, it is evident that the Muslim man got involved in the relationship with the specific intent of disenfranchising the Hindu woman from her professed faith with manipulation and coercion. For that reason, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime.
