Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith

Case Summary

Controversial Kerala cleric Umar Faizi Mukkam made derogatory remarks against Bhagwan Shiv and Mata Parvati during a public speech in Areekode, organised by the Samastha Kerala Sunni Students Federation. Mukkam, a member of the Sunni Muslim organisation Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, made the remarks while discussing mosque surveys in North India, claiming that mosques were being demolished based on claims of the presence of "Shiva lingams and Parvati’s vulva". His comments also referenced the Ajmer Dargah case, alleging a rise in such incidents. The remarks triggered outrage among Hindu organisations, who accused Mukkam of disrespecting Hindu faith and culture. Amid the backlash, Faizi apologised, stating he had no intention of offending Hindus or their beliefs and blamed the controversy on a misinterpretation of his words.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the database under the prime category of- Hate speech against Hindus. Under this, the sub-category selected is- Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. Here, comments about Bhagwan Shiv and Mata Parvati made by the Muslim cleric not only misrepresent these revered deities but also reduce them to an offensive and vulgar context that is inherently disrespectful towards the Hindu religion. The linking of Shiva and Parvati to the demolition of mosques and referencing their divine symbols (the Shiva lingam and the vulva of Parvati) in such a derogatory manner is a direct attack on the core of Hindu religious belief. Shiva is a central figure in Hinduism, revered as the destroyer and transformer in the holy trinity, while Mata Parvati is worshipped as the divine mother and consort of Shiva. To reduce these sacred deities to such crude and unfounded claims is not only an insult to Hindu devotees but also an attempt to undermine the dignity and sanctity of the religion itself. This rhetoric stems from an animosity towards Hinduism, as it involves the intentional denigration of revered religious symbols. In Hinduism, respect for deities and religious symbols is integral to the faith, and to mock these is not just an attack on individual religious sentiments, but also on the community's right to practice and protect their traditions and beliefs and this is why this case classifies as a religiously motivated hate crime and has been added to the tracker.
