Case Summary
Arvind, alias Pappi Sagar, a 27-year-old Bajrang Dal worker was shot and killed on Chorpani Road in Ramnagar on April 30, 2023. He was reportedly called by a mob who then opened fire on him 250 meters from his residence. At the Ramnagar Hospital, the deceased's family members staged a protest and called for the perpetrators' quick arrest. Chandan Sagar, the brother of the deceased, filed a complaint over the murder. Four Muslim youths have been held by police thus far on suspicion. Azam, 20, son of Rafi, Rizwan, 24, alias Sukha, Irfan, 18, son of Iqrar Hussain, and Sabir, 18, alias Puncher, are the identified suspects in this murder. They are all residents of Lutabad Ramnagar, district Nainital. Previously in February, the residence of Bajrang Dal worker Arvind was attacked, causing injuries to his mother and sister. The deceased also filed a case against seven suspects after his house was vandalized earlier, but the police did not act on the complaint. SSP Pankaj Bhatt took disciplinary action against female constable Manisha Singh and Ramnagar Kotwali-based Dhela police station chief Ravindra Rana for their incompetence in the case.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, while it is true that suspected Muslim perpetrators killed a Hindu activist who belonged to a Hindu organization, there are no more details available to validate a religious angle to the case. It has been detailed that the activist had filed a complaint against 7 Muslim men for vandalizing his house and some of them were arrested over suspicion of his murder, however, the trigger of the murder is unsubstantiated. This case is being added to the undecided category and will be added to the hate crime database if more details emerge.
