Hindu girl lured and abducted for religious conversion by Muslim man in Azamgarh
Case Summary
In the Makdumpur village of Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, a 21-year-old Hindu girl was lured and abducted for religious conversion by a Muslim man named Sabir. According to the complaint filed by the victim's father, Ram Harakh Rajbhar, the victim was kidnapped by the accused, Sabir, for religious conversion. Police treated the matter with urgency and began searching for the accused and the victim. Seeing the police's strictness, the accused's family locked their home and fled the area. On 30 October 2025, Station House Officer Pradeep Kumar received information that the victim and the accused were waiting for a vehicle at the Fulwaria underpass on the Purvanchal Expressway. Acting swiftly, a police team immediately reached the site and rescued the victim, while the accused managed to escape. The victim was brought to the police station for questioning, and the police were in the process of recording her statement. The accused remained absconding, and police continued efforts to arrest him. Further legal action would be taken based on the victim’s statement.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, based on the statements of the victim's father, there is a strong suspicion that the Hindu girl was lured and abducted by the Muslim accused for religious conversion. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu girls due to inherent animosity towards Hindus. Hindu girls are very vulnerable to crimes like rape and forced conversion at the hands of Muslim men. However, it is equally important to note that the victim was an adult at the time of her disappearance. Thus, she was legally capable of making her own decisions regarding her own life. She has the legal right to choose her partner, elope, adopt any religion, and marry as she wishes, provided her actions are consensual and free from force, duress, deception, or coercion. It could be entirely possible that she acted of her own accord and went away of her free will. Though being an adult does not negate the possibility of manipulation or coercion, it requires cautious evaluation of the available evidence. While the account of the victim’s father is significant, it should not be taken at face value in the absence of a statement from the victim herself, especially considering factors such as emotional distress and social stigma that may influence his perspective. At Hinduphobia Tracker, we adhere to rigorous standards before categorising any incident as a religiously motivated hate crime. In this instance, as the victim was an adult and there was currently no direct evidence of coercion or harassment for conversion, we are adding this case to the Undecided database. If any further information emerges indicating a religious motivation or confirming aspects of coercion or the victim's own statement, we will review the case and add it to the hate crime database. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incidents based on when an event occurred or when the victim's ordeal began. It is important to clarify that none of the media sources covering this case has specified the exact date when the victim's ordeal began. Therefore, for documentation purposes, we have recorded the date based on when the victim was rescued - 30 October 2025.
