Hindu cow protection activist brutally attacked with sticks and stones by mob of radicals in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh
Case Summary
Dheeraj Kaushik, a member of a cow-protection group, was attacked in Mathura’s Govardhan area after he went to look into a complaint about illegal meat sales in Radhakund's Valmiki basti. He visited the settlement to check the information and had a brief argument with some residents, but the situation had then calmed, and he left. About half an hour later, a group of 30-40 outsider men, called in by some resident of the Valmiki basti, went to Dheeraj’s plot and assaulted him with sticks and stones. The Hindu activist was severely injured, and the attackers dispersed when the police arrived. Police personnel took Dheeraj for medical treatment, and he was later referred to the district hospital due to the severity of his condition. Following his complaint, the police registered a case and began reviewing CCTV footage and local information to identify those involved. Security in the area was strengthened as tension remained after the incident.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the prime category- Attack not resulting in death. The sub-category relevant in this case is- Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. This case qualifies as a hate crime against Hindus because the activist was attacked specifically for his identity and role as a Hindu opposing radical elements. The criminals did not assault him in a random act of violence; the attack was triggered when the activist sought to stop their unlawful activity in defence of Hindu values. The Hindu man was targeted for being part of a Hindu organisation that actively resists such crimes. The Hindu activist intervened to oppose actions that violated Hindu sentiment as well as the law. In doing so, he became a direct victim of a violent attack. The assault was intended to punish and intimidate him, sending a message that any Hindu who resists such radical activities could face violent consequences. The attack goes beyond ordinary crime and constitutes a hate crime. The violence was directed at a Hindu activist precisely because he asserted himself against actions harmful to his community. Thus, this case is added to the hate crime database. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incidents based on when an event occurred or when the victim's ordeal began.
