Case Summary
Near the Hanuman temple in the Edapadavu area of Mangaluru, Karnataka, a 22-year-old Hindu youth named Akhilesh was brutally attacked with swords by four Muslim men. According to reports, the incident occurred on 24 November 2025, when the Hindu victim, a resident of Poopadi Kallu in Arekodi, was going somewhere on a scooter. During this time, four Muslim men, identified as Sahil Akram, Nazir, Shinaan and Irshad, followed Akhilesh on their scooter after spotting him on the road, and recorded a video of him. One of the accused attacked the victim with a sword, causing a deep wound to his right forearm. Akhilesh, who was associated with a local Hindu organisation, was rushed to the hospital and was out of danger. During the attack, one of the attackers fell off the scooter, which enabled local residents to apprehend him and hand him over to the police, while another was arrested later. Senior officials and the Bajpe police inspected the scene and recovered a knife and a sword from a bag found at the spot. As of the date of writing this report, Shinaan and Irshad were arrested by the police, and a search is underway for the remaining two attackers.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a Hindu youth was attacked with swords by four Muslim men near a Hanuman temple. The targeted nature of the assault, carried out by the Muslim men who followed the Hindu victim, recorded a video of him, and then violently attacked him, raises serious concern about possible religious animosity as the underlying motive, since it was stated that the victim was linked to a local Hindu organisation. The brutality of the attack suggests that the Muslim perpetrators may have harboured deep-seated animosity towards the victim, potentially driven by religious bias or hatred. Such excessive violence often reflects underlying communal tensions. Numerous documented instances show Muslims targeting Hindus with hostility rooted in disdain for the Hindu community and faith. Many communal attacks by Muslims against Hindus stem directly from such religious hatred, rendering this incident a strong candidate for hate crime classification. There is a well-documented precedent where hostility towards the Hindu community has played a significant role in similar violent incidents. These acts are rarely isolated instances of violence but rather stem from entrenched religious intolerance and animosity, fitting into a broader pattern of anti-Hindu hatred. However, in this specific case, there is currently no direct evidence to indicate that the attack was premeditated or motivated by religious hatred. No religious slurs or statements against the victim were made during the incident, and the investigation so far has not revealed any prior connection or animosity between the accused and the victim. While it remains possible that the victim was attacked simply because he was a Hindu associated with a Hindu organisation and working for a Hindu cause, there is no explicit evidence to point towards that aspect as well. Since there are currently no clear indicators of religious motivation in this case, and neither the victim nor his family nor media reports have suggested such a motive; therefore, the case has been added to the Undecided database. If any further evidence emerges confirming a religious motive, then the case would be reclassified accordingly and added to the hate crime database.
