Hindu woman lured by Muslim man posing as Hindu, raped inside hotel booked with fake documents
Case Summary
A Hindu woman was lured into a deceptive relationship by Sameer, a Muslim man who introduced himself as a Hindu and used the false name Sameer Nayak. The woman, originally from Maharashtra and studying in Bhopal for the past five years, had first stayed at Hotel New Pari near the Mahakal Temple during a visit to Ujjain a year earlier. It was during that visit that Sameer, who operated the hotel, took her phone number and later began contacting her. Police records showed that the hotel belonged to Mohammad Irfan and had been rented by Abdul Bareek of Rajgarh, while Sameer managed its daily operations. According to the police and the woman’s complaint, Sameer continued to message her, disguised his religious identity, and eventually persuaded her to come to Ujjain. After she arrived, he raped her. When members of the Hindu Jagran Manch learnt about the incident, they reached the hotel, located Sameer after he attempted to flee, and handed him over to the police within an hour. Mahakal police registered a case of rape and other charges against the accused and placed him under arrest. The incident also exposed irregularities at the hotel, including lodging guests without ID verification. This led to chaos at the site, after which the police sealed the hotel. The station in charge, Gagan Badal, stated that legal action would also be taken against the hotel owner for the violations found during the inquiry.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category in this case is: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The first subcategory under this is: Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary category under this is: Name Changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. Another subcategory under this is: Brainwashed and/or groomed. The tertiary category under this is: Rape and sexual assault/harassment. In several cases, a Hindu woman and/or minor is sexually harassed and/or assaulted with a religious motive. For example, in a case in Kausambi, UP, a Hindu girl was raped by non-Hindu perpetrators. During the assault, the victim pleaded to 'spare her in the name of Bhagwan'. The perpetrators then asked her to plead in the name of Allah. This clearly indicates a religious motive for the crime and evidences the religious animosity the perpetrators harbored against the victim owing to her religious identity. Such cases would be added to this tertiary category since the religious animosity makes the crime a hate crime. This case has been added to the Hinduphobia Tracker because the behaviour of the accused followed a clear pattern of religious deception that specifically targeted a Hindu woman. The man concealed his Muslim identity, adopted a Hindu name, established contact under false pretences, and used this constructed identity to build trust and draw the woman into a relationship. Such conduct does not emerge in a vacuum. It mirrors a wider pattern documented across several regions in which Hindu women have been approached through manipulation, fabricated identities, and calculated emotional influence. These tactics rely on the assumption that a Hindu woman may feel safer with a Hindu man, and therefore the deception itself becomes the central tool for gaining access to her private space. The deliberate decision to adopt a Hindu name carries meaning beyond personal dishonesty. It reflects an intention to penetrate the social and religious comfort zone of the victim, bypass her natural caution, and create a scenario in which she is disconnected from accurate knowledge about the man’s background. This behaviour has been noted repeatedly in cases where Hindu women have later reported pressure for intimacy, marriage, or conversion. The deception becomes the foundation upon which further exploitation is made possible. In this case, the misuse of trust resulted in rape, which raises the gravity of the incident. The categories relevant to this case exist because the act of religious impersonation has been shown to facilitate crimes that specifically affect Hindu women. The targeting is not random. Hindu identity becomes the entry point through which the perpetrator secures proximity and influence. Although not every instance of religious deception leads to coercion or violence, the pattern has been documented frequently enough to demonstrate that such actions can serve as preparatory steps that eventually erode a woman’s agency and compromise her ability to make informed decisions. Sexual violence within this context further strengthens the argument for a religious motive. The assault followed a sequence of deception based on religious identity, which shaped the entire trajectory of the interaction. The woman did not engage with a man who presented himself honestly. She engaged with a person who had created a Hindu version of himself for the specific purpose of drawing her into a relationship. When the deception culminates in rape, the crime cannot be detached from the method used to engineer access to the victim. In such cases, the deception becomes inseparable from the harm. The presence of religious impersonation, the targeting of a Hindu woman, the misuse of trust based on Hindu identity, and the subsequent sexual assault collectively meet the threshold for a hate crime against Hindus. The behaviour demonstrates hostility towards Hindu identity by exploiting it as a tool for control and harm. For these reasons, the case has been added to the hate crime database with the appropriate categorisation. Disclaimer: The exact date of the incident has not been mentioned in the available reports.
