Hindu man killed, his throat slit by unidentified people in Bangladesh amidst ongoing persecution of Hindus
Case Summary
In Chardarbesh Union under Sonagazi Upazila of the Feni district in Bangladesh, a Hindu man named Manoranjan Das, also known as Manoranjan Bhuiyan, aged 65, was killed and his throat was slit by unidentified individuals. According to reports, the incident occurred on 16th November 2025. The victim, an auto-rickshaw driver, was a resident of Ward Number 5 of the Kalabagan area, adjacent to Bhuiyan Bazar. The police and the family of the deceased stated that around 9 pm, some youths hired a battery-powered auto-rickshaw from Sonagazi town to travel to the Saheb Ghat bridge on the small Feni river. When the auto-rickshaw crossed the Saheb Ghat bridge, the youths stopped the vehicle, assaulted Manoranjan, and attempted to steal the rickshaw. When Manoranjan resisted, they slit his throat with a sharp knife and fled, abandoning the auto-rickshaw beside the canal. Locals discovered the bloody body near the canal at night and alerted the police. Police arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and sent it to the Feni 250-bed General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Mohin Uddin, a neighbour of the deceased, said, "Manoranjan had been driving a rickshaw for 25 years. He had bought a new auto-rickshaw on instalments just a week ago. It is believed the perpetrators slit his throat after failing to steal the new auto-rickshaw." Sonagazi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Alam said that the body was found in a canal on the Sonagazi-Companiganj border in Feni. Police from both stations were working jointly at the scene. Multiple police teams are actively investigating the case to solve the murder. Legal action will be taken regarding the incident. This incident is one of the several incidents of the continued persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh, which has only increased manifold since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5, 2024. After her violent ouster, Bangladesh plunged into chaos as Islamist extremists took advantage of the political turmoil to unleash a wave of terror and violence against the Hindu community. The Islamist mobs have attacked Hindu homes, burned them to the ground, and abducted women in a horrific descent into anarchy. Several temples have been destroyed in various parts of the Islamic country in a major crackdown on Hindus. Reports have exposed how Muslim students forced around 60 Hindu teachers, professors, and government officials to resign. Exiled Bangladeshi activist Asad Noor has also revealed that the minority Hindu community is now being coerced into joining ‘Jamaat-e-Islami’. Hindu religious events have been repeatedly targeted. On 6th September, a procession carrying Lord Ganesha’s idol was attacked in Chittagong. Ahead of Durga Puja, multiple incidents of idol vandalism occurred, including attacks in Mymensingh, Pabna, Rajshahi, Kishoreganj, and Dhaka. On 29th November, a violent Muslim mob attacked three temples in Patharghata, Chittagong, immediately after Jumma Namaz. The crackdown on Hindu voices has also escalated. On 30th November, Hindu journalist Munni Saha was arrested in Dhaka. Muslim mob attacks have increased in Bangladesh. For example, on 22nd May 2025, a Muslim mob carried out arson attacks selectively on Hindu homes in Dahar Mashihati village in Abhaynagar upazila in Jessore district of Bangladesh. Even ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu and his aides have been targeted, and attempts have been made to ban ISKCON and suppress Hindu protests through sedition charges. These arbitrary actions point to a systematic pattern of persecution of Hindus under Muhammad Yunus’s interim government.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been categorised under the ‘Undecided’ database in the Hinduphobia Tracker, as there is currently no conclusive evidence confirming a religious motivation behind the crime. However, it is critical to consider the wider context in which this incident occurred. Bangladesh has a long history of systemic persecution and violent attacks against the Hindu minority by the Muslim majority. This troubling pattern escalated sharply following the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5th August 2024. Since her ousting, violence against Hindus has surged dramatically, with widespread reports of rapes, forced conversions, mob lynchings, assaults, temple desecrations, and the forcible displacement of Hindus from their ancestral properties. Given this deteriorating situation, it is entirely plausible that the Hindu man involved in this case was targeted and killed because of his religious identity. At the same time, it remains equally possible that the attack was not driven by religious animosity but was a crime of opportunity motivated by robbery. Therefore, in the absence of definitive evidence pointing to a religious motive, the case remains categorised as ‘Undecided’. If any further information emerges indicating the crime was motivated by religious hostility, this case will be reassessed and added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
