Hindu youth in UP commits suicide after being pressured to convert to Islam by Muslim youths
Case Summary
In the Auraiya district of Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu youth named Rohit Kumar tragically took his own life after facing coercion to convert to Islam. Rohit, as seen in a viral video, alleged that individuals named Sattar and Salman had falsely accused him and pressured him to marry a Muslim girl and embrace Islam. Family members of Rohit claimed that after he refused to convert, Sattar, Salman, and others filed a case against him under the POCSO Act and continued pressuring him to marry a Muslim girl. Before his suicide by consuming poison on Saturday, November 18, Rohit recorded a video expressing his emotional turmoil.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case is a distinct case of religiously motivated hate crime as the Hindu victim was being forced to give up his professed faith and accept Islam. Unaccepting, the victim committed suicide. This case falls under the hate tracker's primary category of "predatory proselytization" and the sub-category of "suicide after pressure to convert" as a result of these case details. When there is pressure, threat or coercion employed upon the Hindu victim to convert to a different religion, in several cases, owing to the humiliation or pressure/threat, the victim commits suicide. In such cases, the pressure/threat/intimidation/coercion/violence itself is driven by animosity towards the victim’s Hindu faith. The pressure/threat that is employed leads to the Hindu victim taking his own life. Since the victim’s faith is at the heart of the pressure to convert and the ensuing suicide by the victim, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes.
