On November 2, 2023, beef was thrown at the Hanuman temple of Sukhadi Bigha, a village under Amjhar Sharif Panchayat of Haspura block of district Aurangabad. Even before this, there had been incidents of throwing pieces of meat in the temple.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. Beef being thrown inside a temple has special significance as far as persecution of Hindus is concerned. Cow is revered in Hinduism and the killing of a cow is considered one of the greatest sins. The cow has been used to persecute Hindus for centuries. Cows were slaughtered and thrown in temples even by Islamic invaders and women and men, for example, were force-fed cow meat (beef) for the purpose of forceful conversion. Throwing beef in a temple is done with a special intention of desecrating the faith of Hindus. For that reason, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime.
