Case Summary

In Kutch's Nakhatrana village, stones were thrown at a Ganesh mandap, resulting in the desecration of Lord Ganesh's idol. Muslim children were used to carry out this act, which also included hoisting an Islamic flag atop a nearby Hindu temple, replacing the traditional Hindu "Dhwaja" flag. The incident, which took place in Kotada Jadodar hamlet, was captured in multiple videos that circulated on social media. Local authorities registered a case and arrested seven individuals — three minors and four adults, including Maulana Ghulam Hussain Jafar, Asif Sumra Padhiyar, Sahil Ramzan and Hanif Jusan. The minors were involved in damaging the idol, while the adults were implicated in the flag hoisting. Kutch-East District Police Chief Sagar Bagmar confirmed the arrests and mentioned that the father of one of the minors, who is a maulana (cleric), was taken into custody for questioning.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the hate tracker under the prime-category- Attack on Hindu religious symbols. Under this, three sub-categories have been selected. The first is- Desecration of Hindu religious symbol- Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. The second sub-category under which this case has been placed is- Violence against religious structures or centres- In Hinduism, a religious structure is also considered divine. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the religious structure itself is sacred. In this sub-category, we would document attacks against religious structures which are not consecrated temple spaces. Such religious spaces could be temporary in nature – for example – the religious spaces erected specifically for festivals like Durga Puja etc. This category would also document cases of attacks against religious centres. These spaces in their own right may not be ‘sacred’ per se, however, are often spaces where religious gurus live, religious teaching is imparted, or belong to religious institutions. Any attack against religious structures is a result of animosity towards the religion itself, which manifests itself through the religious spaces and therefore, such attacks are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. Religious centres are also manifestations of the religion, its teachings or gurus and therefore, attacks against such centres would be considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case is a clear example of a hate crime motivated by religion, as it involves multiple acts of hostility against Hindu religious structures and symbols. The attack on the Ganesh mandap and the deliberate desecration of Lord Ganesh's idol represent an outright assault on the sanctity of Hindu places of worship. Such actions are meant to demean and insult the religious sentiments of the Hindu community, striking at the core of their spiritual beliefs. The hoisting of an Islamic flag atop a Hindu temple symbolizes an attempt to assert religious supremacy by replacing the traditional Hindu "Dhwaja" flag. This act of desecration is not only a violation of the sacred space but also a visible statement of disrespect toward the Hindu faith and symbolically - the annihilation of the faith and its religious representations. By targeting a religious structure and desecrating religious symbols, this incident falls under the category of violence against religious centres, further heightening communal tensions and fostering animosity. This case, therefore, encompasses multiple aspects of religiously motivated hate crimes all of which are intended to provoke and intimidate the Hindu community. The other troubling aspect of this case is that the perpetrators here included minors. Children's minds are indeed highly impressionable, and they often internalise the attitudes and beliefs of those around them. When exposed to hatred and prejudice against a particular religion, they are likely to adopt these views, which can lead to a cycle of intolerance and bigotry. The fact that the Muslim children in this instance desecrated Hindu religious symbols highlights the intolerance and bias that has been ingrained in them since childhood, which, in this case, catalysed the crime they committed.
