The incident involved four attackers. The attack took place in the Naveen market area of Kanpur City's eastern region, where Hargunani's shoe store is located. The assailant, along with three others, had been employed at the shop but was recently dismissed due to inefficiency. The attack occurred around 8:30 to 9 pm when the minor entered the showroom wielding a large knife and stabbed Hargunani eleven times. After the attack, the perpetrator fled the scene but was apprehended the next day at his relative's house in Lucknow. He confessed during interrogation that he attacked Hargunani due to mistreatment over money before Eid. Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, the Muslim minor worker stabbed the Hindu employer multiple times because he did not get his money before Eid. The religious angle here is apparent since the religious festival was a part of the motivation to commit the crime. However, to add it to the hate crime database, the motivating factor has to be animosity towards the victim and the victim's religious identity. In this case, while the perpetrator's festival formed a part of the motivation to commit the crime, there is a lack of indication of whether he harbored animosity specifically toward the faith of the victim. The suspicion that the crime was motivated by religious animosity is present, however, there is a lack of specific indication that religious animosity formed a part of his motivation to commit the crime. This case, therefore, is being categorized as 'undecided'. If more information emerges, it will be added to the hate crime tracker.
