Muslim man poses as Hindu, forces her to abort when pregnant

Case Summary
In Rajasthan’s Dausa area, a Muslim man named Rashid Khan masqueraded as a Hindu to trap the victim and established a sexual relationship promising to marry her. The offender who is a native of Uttar Pradesh’s Kasai Padai worked at a private company along with the girl in Dausa. The two came in contact with each other in August 2023. He introduced himself with a fake name hiding that he is Muslim and befriended her over this period. He promised marriage and established a sexual relationship with the victim till February 2024. Meanwhile, the victim became pregnant but Rashid Khan forced her to abort the baby. A case has been registered against the culprit and an investigation is underway after which action will be taken against him.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
What gives this case a distinct religious angle is that the Muslim perpetrator actively hid his religion and pretended to be a Hindu to ensnare the Hindu woman. He had no intention to marry the Hindu woman but kept taking advantage of her under the false promise of marriage. The Muslim perpetrator specifically targeted the woman based on her religion as evidenced by the fact that he continued to hide his religious identity from the victim. This points towards a crime with his motivations being driven by religious hate. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime.
