Case Summary

Pieces of restricted meat were discovered in front of Kali temple in Ranchi and at two other locations in the city, sparking outrage among the locals. CCTV footage revealed that the meat got dropped from a passing tractor-trolley, which no one initially noticed. The discovery led to roadblocks by protesters at Lalpur-Albert Ekka Chowk, demanding immediate action against those responsible for hurting religious sentiments. Senior police officers, along with Durga Puja Committee members and BJP leaders, tried to calm the situation, but the public's anger persisted. Meat was also found on Chadri Sarnasthal Road and Kali Mandir Road, but the police quickly removed it to prevent further escalation. Ranchi’s SP (rural) Sumit Agarwal stated that the tractor-trolley carrying the meat was seen on CCTV, raising concerns about a possible smuggling network. The police have yet to trace the vehicle. Additional security forces were deployed, and the police promised to catch the culprits within 48 hours while urging people to remain calm and ignore rumours.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

In this case, 'restricted meat' was found outside the temple. When the report says 'restricted meat', in all probability, the meat was beef - cow meat. There are strong suspicions that the tractor from which the meat fell was illegally smuggling cow meat. There is also a suspicion that the smugglers strategically threw the meat in front of temples. On the face it, it would seem too much of a coincidence for the tractor to stop meat exactly in front of temples in two separate locations. Possibly, the act was a result of religious animosity. However, the details of the case say that the meat 'fell off' a tractor. From this, while strong suspicions exists, it is not possible to conclusively say whether the meat was dropped in front of temples deliberately or not. For that reason, this case is being added to the undecided category.
