Hindu farmer and his three children found hanging from a tree in Sindh
Case Summary
On October 5, 2024, in Sindh, Pakistan, a 32-year-old Hindu farmer, Chaman Kolhi, and his three children — 8-year-old Bhagchand, 6-year-old Hero, and 4-year-old Sohni, were found hanging from a tree in Umerkot district. The bodies were discovered on a mango farm under the jurisdiction of Bodar Farm police station. According to initial police reports, financial struggles and tensions with his wife due to a poor harvest might have driven Chaman to hang his children before taking his own life. The incident raised concerns about the increasing hardships faced by the Hindu community in Sindh, particularly the rising suicide rates. Hindu activist Shiva Kacchi highlighted this issue on social media, blaming hunger and unemployment for the tragedy and criticising the government's lack of action. The police collected the bodies and took them to a government hospital for a postmortem examination.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, reports have indicated that the Hindu man in Pakistan (A Muslim-majority nation) killed his children and then himself because of financial difficulties and tensions with his wife. However, Hindus in Pakistan are regularly persecuted with authorities, including the judiciary, turning a blind eye to the persecution. However, since there is no evidence on record to indicate the religious motive of a possible homicide, this case is being added to the undecided database. If more information emerges, it would be added to the hate crime database.
