The suspect, Mostakin Sardar, was arrested after confessing to the killing but denied sexually assaulting the girl. The Baruipur district SP, Palash Chandra Dhali, confirmed the arrest and stated, "He has admitted to killing the girl but has denied raping her. We are waiting for the post-mortem report." The girl had gone missing after attending tuition classes on October 4 and was found dead the next day in a canal, about 500 meters from her home. Villagers said the victim had been raped before being killed and dumped into the canal. They also accused the local police of failing to act promptly and harassing the family instead of taking preventive measures. Her father demanded the death penalty for the accused. Outrage over the incident led to widespread protests, with villagers blocking roads in Jayanagar and Kultali. They stormed a local police station, setting it ablaze. Footage circulating on social media showed women armed with sticks clashing with police, pelting stones, and destroying public property, including bikes.
