Police detain several in Baksha over religious conversion activities
Case Summary
On the evening of October 2, 2024, in Aunka village, under the Baksha police station, the Panchayat police detained half a dozen individuals, including a woman, following reports of religious conversion activities and religious remarks. Amit Rai from Sarokhanpur village in Badlapur, along with others, arrived at the scene where around 100 women were gathered at the house of Yamdhari Gautam. Reportedly, some individuals from Benipur Devgaon, Azamgarh, were trying to convince them to adopt Christianity. When questioned, they spoke about registering a society. Acting on a tip from a Bajrang Dal worker, Inspector Uday Tap Singh dispatched a police force, who detained several people and brought them to the police station.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
There is a lack of information in this case. While a congregation of 100 Hindus for the purpose of conversion does raise suspicion of predatory proselytisation, there is no information as to any threat, allurement or coercion being employed. It is therefore entirely possible that Hindus were converting to Christianity out of their free will. For that reason, this is being added as 'undecided'. If more information emerges, it would be added to the hate crime database.
