Case Summary

In Agartala, Tripura, a Hindu transgender woman named Kamalika Das was deceived into a romantic relationship by a Muslim man who pretended to be Hindu. The accused subjected the victim to severe physical violence and exploited her financially. The accused was identified as Jalil Mia, who introduced himself as Sujit Das in order to trap the victim in a relationship. According to the victim’s complaint filed on 15th August 2025, the accused developed a relationship with her by pretending to share her faith and later eloped with her. The accused then took her to his residence, where she found his true identity and realised she had been trapped. When she attempted to leave, Mia forcibly confined her in his home for three days, during which she endured physical and psychological abuse. With the assistance of his family members, the accused subjected her to inhumane cruelty, tying her up, stripping her, beating her mercilessly, and pricking her body with sharp objects before sprinkling salt water on her wounds. Her hair and eyebrows were forcibly shaved off, and she was later abandoned unconscious on a roadside in Durga Chowmuhani, from where police rescued her and admitted her to the hospital. After remaining unconscious for several days, the victim regained consciousness and narrated her ordeal to the police. She stated that she had also been cheated of 1.4 lakh rupees in cash and gold jewellery by the accused under the pretext of marriage. Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Police Station, Rana Chatterjee, confirmed that the incident came to light in August when the transgender victim lodged a complaint stating that she had been deceived, tortured, and robbed of her possessions by a Muslim man who had falsely presented himself as Sujit Das, a Hindu. Police investigation revealed that the accused’s real name was Jalil Mia, a resident of Rajnagar on the outskirts of Agartala. Officer Chatterjee also stated that the accused, Jalil, who had been absconding since the incident, had been arrested and would be produced before the court. He added that investigations were in progress to determine the motive behind the impersonation and suppression of his religious identity. Sneha Gupta Roy, a member of the Transgender Welfare Board, condemned the brutal assault and commended the police for their swift action in apprehending the accused. She said that the victim had been deceived in the name of love and subjected to unimaginable cruelty, expressing hope that the court would deliver an exemplary punishment to ensure such crimes were never repeated. Meanwhile, the victim continued to struggle with both physical and psychological trauma as she recovered from the brutal atrocities.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is- Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary category selected is- Name Changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. Another primary category selected is- Attack not resulting in death. The subcategory selected is- Attacked for Hindu identity. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. This case constitutes a clear hate crime motivated by religious bias. The Muslim perpetrator deliberately posed as a Hindu man to deceive and trap a Hindu transgender woman in a romantic relationship. This deceit itself demonstrated hostility and prejudice towards the victim’s religious identity. Had the perpetrator genuinely desired a relationship, he could have revealed his true religious identity honestly. Instead, by assuming a false Hindu name, Sujit, and deceiving the victim under fabricated affection, he targeted her faith and trust. This deception was not a mere act of personal betrayal; it reflected systemic religious profiling against the victim due to her Hindu identity. The accused knew that the Hindu victim would likely have declined a relationship with him due to religious reasons, and hence, he circumvented this barrier by lying about his faith. Such deception reveals deliberate intent and animosity, violating the victim’s right to religious autonomy and her freedom to choose relationships. This calculated deception demonstrates entrenched religious hostility aimed at the victim’s identity as a Hindu, making it a religiously motivated crime. When the victim found out the accused's real identity, she was subjected to brutal physical assault. The violence inflicted upon her displayed an extraordinary level of brutality. The accused and his family tied her up, stripped her naked, beat her ruthlessly, pricked her body with sharp objects, and poured salt water into her wounds. They forcibly shaved her hair and eyebrows before abandoning her unconscious by the roadside. These acts revealed cruel intent — far beyond random violence — reflecting deep-seated religious antagonism. The physical assault, humiliation, and mental torture inflicted on a Hindu transgender woman made it clear that this violence stemmed from hatred for her religion. Assaulting a Hindu individual with such sadistic cruelty demonstrated targeted religious violence, qualifying this case as a hate-driven crime motivated by religious animosity. In addition to the physical and psychological violence, the accused also exploited the victim financially, swindling 1.4 lakh rupees in cash and gold ornaments under the false pretext of marriage. This financial exploitation was not an isolated act of greed; it stemmed directly from his religious hostility towards the victim. By deliberately targeting a Hindu transgender woman, deceiving her through religious impersonation, and robbing her of her savings, the accused exhibited deep-seated animosity towards her religious identity. Exploiting her financially while simultaneously humiliating her physically and emotionally intensified the gravity of the hate crime. The deliberate financial harm inflicted upon a Hindu victim because of her faith further demonstrated that the crime was not merely personal but driven by malicious religious motivation. It must also be acknowledged that the victim belonged to the transgender community, one of the most marginalised and vulnerable sections of Indian society. The transgender community already faces systemic discrimination and exclusion, making its members more susceptible to targeted violence. The fact that the accused chose a transgender Hindu woman as his victim, deceived her through religious impersonation, and then subjected her to extreme brutality intensifies the gravity of the crime. This attack was a clear instance of a religiously motivated offence. Given that this case meets the parameters of a religiously motivated crime, it is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records the date of incidents based on when the crime actually occurred or when the victim’s ordeal began, rather than when the crime is reported by the media. However, media sources state that the victim filed a complaint against the accused on 15th August 2025. Therefore, for documentation purposes, an indicative date of 15th August 2025 is used as an estimate of when the victim’s ordeal began. This date serves solely for record-keeping and estimation.
