Muslim man spits on food while working at local restaurant; resulting in outrage by Hindu locals and activists
Case Summary
In the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, a video of a Muslim youth named Adnam spitting while preparing tandoori roti at a local dhaba went viral on social media, provoking widespread anger among local Hindu residents and Hindu organisations. The incident occurred late on 15 October 2025, between 10:30 and 10:45 pm, at a dhaba located in front of the Bazaar police station. The Muslim youth, Adnam, a resident of Bhojpur, Moradabad, was spitting on roti while making them, which was being served to the customers. The video triggered public outrage and protests. Hindu activists from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, and Uttarakhand Kranti Dal gathered near the bus stand and carried out a procession through the main market, leading to the closure of numerous shops, including the vegetable market. Hindu activists confronted Adnam and handed him over to the Kotwali police station. The police acted swiftly to prevent further escalation and closed the dhaba to calm the crowd. Later, a meeting was held between the police administration and Hindu organisations, during which the police assured that strict action would be taken against the accused. The police stated that a case was registered under sections 196(1) b and 274 of the Indian Penal Code for hurting religious sentiments by spitting and contaminating food. In addition, Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety Ashwini Singh initiated proceedings under section 56 of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 for serving contaminated food, which could result in a fine of up to one lakh rupees, and preparations were made to cancel the dhaba’s food license.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
There are several incidents where a Muslim perpetrator purposely spits in the food or at Hindus owing to their intrinsic religious animosity towards the Hindu faith and those professing it. It is a doctrinal fact that, according to Islam, spitting can "ward off Satan", and according to the same religious doctrine, non-Muslims are considered the manifestations of Satan. There is, therefore, a strong suspicion that the perpetrator in this case spat in the food owing to religious animosity. However, since no such statement has been made by the police or the news reports, this case is currently being categorised under the 'Undecided' database. If more information emerges showcasing religious animosity as a motivation behind the crime, then it will be added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
