Minor tribal Hindu girl lured into relationship, abducted, and raped by Muslim man in Assam
Case Summary
A minor tribal Hindu girl was lured into a relationship by a Muslim man named Anamul Haque Laskar, an auto-rickshaw driver by profession. Following this, the accused abducted the Hindu victim and then raped her twice. According to reports, the incident took place on the night of 7th June 2025. It occurred around 8 p.m. while the minor girl was studying in her room. Laskar took advantage of her father’s absence and her mother's being in the adjacent kitchen to abduct the girl. He abducted and took the girl in an auto-rickshaw to a deserted location near the Arunabond Tea Estate, several kilometres away, where he raped her twice. Following this, Laskar dropped her off near her home the next morning before fleeing. The victim’s mother lodged a First Information Report (FIR) at Udharbond Police Station. In her statement to the authorities, the victim mentioned a pre-existing “relationship” with Laskar and stated that she had been unaware of his marital status until the incident. The matter reached the Cachar POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court. Despite the victim stating that she was in a relationship with the accused, the court proceeded under the strict provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, under which the consent of a minor is legally irrelevant. Initial information and the victim’s account suggested the involvement of a neighbour, Selim Uddin, and his wife, who had lured the girl out and handed her over to the accused. However, the subsequent charge sheet named only Anamul Haque Laskar as the accused. The POCSO Court found Anamul Haque Laskar guilty and sentenced him under the following provisions: Section 363 of the Indian Penal Code (Kidnapping), for which he received three years of imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000; and Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, under which he was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹20,000. The minor girl's family expressed relief after the verdict, saying they were grateful for the timely justice. A member of the victim's family said, “We are poor tea garden workers and do not have the means to fight long cases. The way the police and the court handled this matter seriously and delivered justice on time, we consider this true justice."
Why it is Hate Crime ?
In this case, a Hindu minor girl was lured into a relationship and abducted by a Muslim man. After abduction, she was raped by the accused. This could potentially be a crime motivated by religious profiling, as it has been observed that in many cases, Muslim perpetrators target Hindu minor girls due to inherent animosity towards Hindus and their faith. Hindu girls are very vulnerable to crimes like rape and sexual assault at the hands of Muslim men. However, it is also possible that the crime was one of opportunity, where the Hindu girl was simply accessible to the Muslim perpetrator. Meanwhile, it could also be argued that for a Muslim perpetrator, a Muslim girl would likely be more accessible than a Hindu girl. The fact that the perpetrator specifically targeted a Hindu girl could suggest religious profiling of the victim. It is also important to emphasise that the girl in question is a minor. In such cases, the concept of ‘consent’ is irrelevant; minors are not mature enough to make significant decisions, such as entering into a sexual or romantic relationship with an adult. Taking advantage of the victim's vulnerability, the accused lured her and assaulted her sexually. Since the case details provide no clear indication of religious motivations, neither the victim nor her parents made any statements suggesting a religious motive behind the crime. For this reason, the case has been added to the 'Undecided' database. If further information emerges that points towards a religious motivation behind this crime, it would then be reclassified and included in the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
