Hindu woman lured into relationship and targeted for attempted sexual exploitation by Muslim man posing as Hindu
Case Summary
In Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand, a Hindu woman was deceived into a romantic relationship by a Muslim man pretending to be Hindu. Following this, the accused took the victim to a hotel, intending to sexually exploit her. According to media reports, this incident occurred at a hotel in Rudrapur city on 14th October 2025. The Muslim man arrived posing as a Hindu and took the victim into a room. The hotel management became suspicious of his behaviour, and when the matter reached Hindu organisations, activists gathered at the location and informed the police. Shortly after, a police team arrived and escorted both the Muslim man and the Hindu woman to the police station. During police questioning, the man was identified as a resident of Kichha. He admitted that about one and a half years prior, he had met the Hindu victim while working at a beauty parlour. At that time, he had presented himself under a Hindu name and had arranged a fake identity card using that false name. He had lured the woman into a relationship using this deceit. Following this, the Hindu woman’s family was informed of the incident and arrived at the location. After the inquiry, the police handed the Hindu woman over to her mother. Subsequently, the police began interrogating the Muslim man more strictly. Sub-Inspector Naveen Budhani stated, “The investigation is ongoing. The man remains under questioning, and the documents have been sent to the concerned departments for verification. The police have confirmed that appropriate action will be taken once the investigation is complete.”
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is- Man pretends to be Hindu. The tertiary category selected is- Name Changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by malafide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore, making it a religiously motivated hate crime. The other subcategory selected is- Brainwashed and/or Groomed. The tertiary category selected is- Rape and sexual assault/harassment. In our database, we have not added incidents where women have converted to another religion of their free will and no allegations of forced/involuntary conversion have been made. However, there are certain cases of conversion where the consent itself is a result of the brainwashing or grooming of a minor by the non-Hindu perpetrator trying to victimise a woman for her Hindu religious identity. The phenomenon of grooming points to non-Hindu perpetrators identifying their Hindu victims’ vulnerabilities and exploiting them over months and sometimes years, to extract the supposed ‘consent’ in order to convert their religion. In most cases of grooming, the victims are minors or the grooming started when the victim was a minor. In other cases of grooming, the non-Hindu perpetrator brainwashes and grooms a minor victim to extract their trust and then proceeds to rape them repeatedly with the intent of converting them to their faith. It is pertinent to understand here that when the victim is a minor, the ‘consent’ to convert or enter into a romantic relationship with an adult itself is redundant – addressed by POCSO. While every case of conversion of a minor and incidents of establishing a physical relationship with a minor by an adult is a crime, for the purpose of this database, a case would be considered a hate crime only if there is a distinct religious angle to the grooming. For example, in the UK, if a Hindu minor is targeted by Pakistani grooming gangs, it would be considered a hate crime because the victims are specifically targeted owing to their non-Muslim religious identity with the perpetrators being Muslim. In other cases, if a Hindu minor is brainwashed into entering a physical relationship with the non-Hindu adult perpetrator and the family alleges grooming/brainwashing of the minor to convert her religion, it would form a part of this database. If the victim is a Hindu adult, the case would form a part of this database only if the victim herself says that she was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. However, if the victim is deceased (murdered or otherwise), the case would form a part of this database if her family/friends provided testimony that the victim was brainwashed/groomed to convert her religion. Since these crimes have a distinct religious angle where the victim is being targeted owing to her Hindu religious identity, these cases are considered a hate crime. In this case, a Hindu woman was targeted for sexual exploitation by a Muslim man who pretended to be a Hindu man. This deceit itself reflected religious bias and animosity towards the victim’s Hindu identity. If the accused had genuinely wished to form an honest relationship, he could have revealed his true identity and respected the victim’s choice. Instead, he faked his identity, posed as a Hindu, and targeted the victim by exploiting her trust in a person she believed shared her faith. This deceitful act demonstrated a deliberate attempt to religiously profile and victimise her specifically for being Hindu, making it a targeted, religiously motivated crime. The accused was fully aware that the victim, being a Hindu, might not have accepted his advances had she known his true identity, so he deliberately deceived her and trapped her in a fabricated relationship. This itself showcases the animosity that the accused held towards the victim due to her religious identity, making it a religiously motivated crime. Using this deceit, the Muslim perpetrator attempted to sexually exploit the Hindu woman in a hotel room, which reflects deep-seated hatred towards the Hindu community. Sexual exploitation in such cases goes beyond mere sexual gratification; it is a deliberate act aimed at humiliating, dehumanising, and sexualising women of the rival religious community. In this instance, the perpetrator viewed Hindus as his rivals and intentionally targeted and attempted to exploit a Hindu woman to demonstrate animosity towards the Hindu community and their faith. The act of singling out and targeting a Hindu woman specifically because of her religious identity confirms the religious motivation behind the crime. Given that this case meets the parameters of a religiously motivated crime, it is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records the date of an incident based on when the victim’s ordeal started, rather than when it is reported by the media. However, in this particular case, media reports have not specified the exact date when the victim’s suffering commenced. They do confirm that the attempted sexual exploitation occurred on 14th October 2025. The accused stated that he trapped the Hindu woman nearly one and a half years prior. Therefore, based on this information, we are using an indicative date of 14th April 2024 as the beginning of her ordeal. This date is recorded solely for the purpose of documenting the crime.
