Case Summary

In Hamidpur village, Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, a Hindu temple's land was being illegally encroached upon by unidentified miscreants. The accused also attacked the temple's priest and his family over this encroachment. According to media reports, temple priest Pandit Harilal Sharma and his family were attacked on 2nd October 2025. Some unidentified village bullies assaulted the priest and his family with the intention of seizing the temple land. The priest sustained serious injuries in the attack and is undergoing treatment in Bhopal. The Brahmin community expressed outrage over the assault. Representatives from the community approached the Collector's office and submitted a memorandum to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, demanding strict action against the accused. Representatives stated that the Gwalior High Court had already granted the priest the right to perform pujas in the temple. The administration had also handed over control of the temple to him. Despite this, anti-social elements continued to harass him, culminating in this attack. The Priests' Association warned that if strict action was not taken against the accused within three days, the Hindu community, including the Brahmin community, would launch a protest. The community also demanded immediate security for the priest's family. Brahmin community official Raghuveer Sharma stated that incidents of atrocities against priests and encroachment on temple land were steadily increasing in rural areas. He questioned the administration's seriousness and stressed the need for concrete action in such cases. Sanjay Purohit of the Yuva Brahmin Vikas Parishad, a Hindu Brahmin organisation, emphasised that the attack on the priest's family in Hamidpur was carried out with the intention of seizing the temple land. He demanded that the accused be charged under non-bailable sections to prevent future incidents.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category- Attack on Hindu religious representations. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Encroachment or illicit takeover of temple land/land near temple. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Not only the Temple but the Temple premises in its entirety are considered sacred by Hindus. In several cases, the premises of the Temple and/or religious centre are illicitly taken over by institutions belonging to other faiths – like the Waqf board or the Church. Other times, the temple property, land or the property of religious centres are illicitly encroached by non-Hindu groups. Any illicit take over or encroachment is a crime an initio, however, when non-Hindu groups illicitly take over or encroach the sacred land of Hindus, it is an affront to the Hindu community and is therefore classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. Another primary category selected is- Attack not resulting in death. Within this, the subcategory selected is- Attacked for opposing radicals or trying to save victim. In several cases, Hindus are attacked for opposing religiously motivated crimes being committed against a fellow Hindu or simply for voicing an opinion opposing radical elements, who either have in the past or continue to persecute Hindus. In such cases, the initial attack against the victim, against which the Hindu was trying to defend the victim, would also need to be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the initial crime itself was religiously motivated and the subsequent crime of attempting to save the victim or speaking against the radical elements ends up inviting a violent attack, it would also be classified as a religiously motivated hate crime under this category. This case is a clear instance of a hate crime. The act of encroaching on temple land deeply hurts Hindu religious sentiments because, in Hinduism, temple land holds immense divine and revered importance alongside the temple itself. Temples are not merely physical structures; they are core pillars of the Hindu faith, centres of spiritual energy and community cohesion. The land on which a temple stands is considered sacred, symbolising connectedness between the worshipper, the deity, and the universal divine. Attempting to encroach upon this land is not just a property dispute—it is an assault on the very foundations of the Hindu faith. Such illegal encroachment shows profound disrespect and manifests deep-seated religious animosity towards Hindus and their spiritual heritage. Furthermore, the attack on the Hindu priest and his family for defending their temple and temple land highlights the extreme hostility faced by Hindus who stand up to protect their sacred spaces. Those who oppose the unlawful seizure of temple land often become victims of violent reprisals. Attacking temple priests and their families sends a chilling message aimed at intimidating not only the immediate victims but the entire Hindu community. This act of violence against members of the Hindu faith and their protectors clearly reveals the religious animosity harboured by the perpetrators towards the Hindus and their traditions. Such attacks cause widespread fear, not just for the individual victims but for the larger Hindu community. The violence and intimidation propagate fearmongering and create a climate where practising and preserving the Hindu faith and culture becomes dangerous. This contributes to ongoing marginalisation and religious victimisation, making this case an undeniable religiously motivated crime driven by profound hatred. In this case, even though perpetrators remain unidentified, the motivation rooted in religious animosity makes this an unmistakable hate crime. Such acts of hostility towards Hindu temples and those who defend them threaten the spiritual and cultural fabric of the Hindu community. Therefore, this case is being added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records the date of an incident based on when the crime actually occurred. However, in this case, there is no mention of the exact date when the accused began attempting to encroach upon the temple land or when the attacks on the temple priest took place. Therefore, for the purposes of documentation, we are using 6th October 2025, the date when the incident was first reported in the media, as the indicative date. This date is used solely as an estimate and does not represent the exact date of the incident. Media reports state that the temple priest and his family were attacked by the encroachers. However, since these reports do not specify the total number of family members involved, for the purpose of documentation, we are keeping a conservative estimate and recording the victim count as '1', referring solely to the priest.
