Hindu woman raped, blackmailed and forced into conversion, Nikah by Islamic racket; made to wear burqa, perform namaz
Case Summary
In Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, a Hindu woman was blackmailed, raped, and coerced into religious conversion and Nikah (Islamic marriage) by a Muslim man named Altaf Malik, who was part of an organised Islamic conversion racket. She was threatened and subjected to months of abuse by the accused and friends. According to reports, the primary accused, named Altaf Malik alias Guddu, owner of the Bharat Garments showroom in Baghpat, first came into contact with the victim through her husband. The accused exploited the victim's loneliness to entrap her. The victim stated that Altaf filmed her obscene videos in the showroom's trial room and raped her by threatening to make the video viral. He continued to blackmail her and repeatedly exploited her both physically and mentally. The accused also took her to Delhi’s Jama Masjid several times, where he pressured her for religious conversion and Nikah. She was pressured to wear a burqa, offer namaz, and was threatened with being sent to Kerala if she resisted. He made her wear a burqa, perform namaz, and was planning to send her to Kerala. He even changed her name to Muskan, her husband's name to Altaf and told her that she would get Jannat (heaven) if she converted. Fed up with the ordeal, the victim filed a complaint with the police, naming 12 people in the complaint, indicating an organised Islamic conversion racket. It included Shahzad Malik, Naushad, Shabnam, Babu Rana, Raja alias Ikhlaq, Adil alias Billi, Hasan, Shakoor, Nafees, as well as Ikhlaq’s mother, who performed an exorcism and applied amulets on the victim as part of the conversion process. They subjected her to continuous psychological intimidation and instilled fear of social ruin and death if she did not comply. As of the date of writing this report, the investigation was ongoing.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category in this case is: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The first subcategory under this is: - Forced conversion before marriage, with the tertiary category being - Forced to do Nikah and Forced to wear hijab. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, however, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both the situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressurizing the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The other sub-category selected here is - Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The second primary category selected here is - Predatory proselytisation. Within it, the sub-category selected here is - Proselytisation by grooming, brainwashing, manipulation or subtle indoctrination, with the tertiary category being - Rape and sexual assault/harassment. Religious brainwashing essentially means the often subtle and forcible indoctrination to induce someone to give up their religious beliefs to accept contrasting regimented ideas. Religious grooming or brainwashing also involves propaganda and manipulation. It involves the systematic effort, driven by religious malice and indoctrination, to persuade “non-believers’ to accept allegiance, command, or doctrine to and of a contrasting faith. Cases of such grooming or brainwashing are far more nuanced than direct threats, coercion, inducement and violence. In such cases, it is often seen that there is repeated, subtle and continual manipulation of the victim to induce disaffection towards their own faith and acceptance of the contrasting faith of the perpetrator. While subtle indoctrination is widely acknowledged as predatory, an element which is often understated in such conversions or the attempts of such conversion is the role of loyalty and trust which might develop between the perpetrator and the victim. Fiduciary relationships are often abused to affect such religious conversion. For example, an educator transmitting religious doctrine of a competing faith to a Hindu student. The Hindu student is likely to accept what the teacher is transmitting owing to existence of the fiduciary relationship. The exploitation of the fiduciary relationship to religiously indoctrinate victims would also be included in this category. Since the underlying animosity towards the victim’s faith forms the basis of predatory proselytization, such cases are considered religiously motivated hate crimes. This case has been added to the tracker because a Hindu woman was blackmailed, raped, and coerced into religious conversion and Nikah (Islamic marriage) by the Muslim accused, who was part of an organised Islamic conversion racket. The accused deceived her, trapped her, and took obscene videos of her. He then blackmailed her, raped her, and exploited her both physically and mentally. The intention was to break the victim down emotionally, physically, and spiritually, so that she could be converted for Nikah. This was not random violence; it was systematic, targeted, and rooted in religious animosity. In Islam, marriage to a non-Muslim partner is prohibited, which is why she was pressured for religious conversion. The use of obscene videos to blackmail the victim into conversion and Nikah shows how sexual exploitation was interwoven with religious coercion. This shows that the Muslim perpetrator specifically targeted the Hindu victim for sexual exploitation and religious conversion and used these videos to threaten her to make her comply. These threats were not random acts of violence but were directly tied to making her submit. The accused also forcibly made her wear a burqa and perform namaz. The imposition of the burqa on the Hindu victim added another layer to this erasure of her Hindu identity. By forcing her to wear a burqa, the Muslim perpetrator attempted to strip her of her Hindu faith and impose foreign religious practices upon her. It was not merely about clothing; it symbolised the effort to overwrite her Hindu identity and forcibly assimilate her into practices of the Islamic faith. Similarly, making her perform namaz was another instance of exposing her to Islamic practices, making her conversion much easier. This again glaringly demonstrates the religiously motivated nature of the crime. The accused even changed her name to Muskan, a distinctly Muslim name, and altered her husband’s name to Altaf. This was a symbolic act intended to erase her past Hindu identity and reinforce her forced assimilation into the Islamic faith. The case also revealed the existence of an organised Islamic conversion racket, as the victim named twelve accused individuals, including family members and associates of the main perpetrator, who subjected her to blackmail, intimidation, and religious ritual imposition. Such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith, since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised until they convert. Such acts were not merely personal crimes; they were rooted in a desire to dominate and erase the religious identity of the victim. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime.
