Hindu woman lured into relationship, coerced into visiting Ajmer Sharif Dargah for forced religious conversion by Muslim man; raped and forced to consume meat
Case Summary
In Dineshpur, Udham Singh Nagar district, Uttarakhand, a Hindu woman was drugged and raped by a Muslim man. He blackmailed her, took he rot Ajmer Sharif Dargah and forced her to convert to Islam. According to the complaint filed at Dineshpur Police Station on 27 October 2026, the accused had befriended the Hindu woman over the phone and took her to a hotel on the pretext of celebrating his birthday. He mixed a sedative into her cold drink, raped her and recorded an objectionable video. After recording the video, the man began blackmailing the woman and pressuring her to engage in sexual relations with him repeatedly. He threatened to circulate the objectionable video on social media, publicly defame her and kill her if she refused to comply. Whenever he summoned her, she was compelled to meet him. On one occasion, when she refused to go to him, he showed the video to her husband, triggering disputes within her family that eventually resulted in her divorce. He continued to threaten to publish her photographs and videos on social media, subjecting her to persistent mental and physical harassment. Subsequently, she was taken to Ajmer Sharif Dargah in July 2026, where she was forced to convert to Islam. During this period, she was also deceptively made to consume meat. The sexual exploitation and mistreatment continued after the visit to Ajmer Sharif Dargah. The woman lodged a written complaint at Dineshpur Police Station on 27 October 2026. The police registered First Information Report (FIR) No. 179/26 under Section 64 and Section 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 3 and 5 of the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act. Circle Officer (CO) Vibhav Saini confirmed that the case had been registered on the basis of the woman's complaint and stated that the necessary legal action was being undertaken.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category selected in this case is: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is: Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity of being a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim, however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The other primary category selected is: Attack not resulting in death. The subcategory selected is: Attacked for Hindu identity. In several cases, Hindus are attacked merely for their Hindu identity without any perceived provocation. A classic example of this category of religiously motivated hate crime is a murder in 2016. 7 ISIS terrorists were convicted for shooting a school principal in Kanpur because they got ‘triggered’ seeing the Kalava on his wrist and tilak that he had put. In this, the Hindu victim had offered no provocation except for his Hindu religious identity. The motivation for the murder was purely religious, driven by religious supremacy. Such cases where Hindus are targeted merely for their religious identity would be documented as a hate crime under this category. This case is being added to the Hinduphobia Tracker because the Muslim accused did not merely sexually exploit a Hindu woman but also targeted her religious identity by taking her to Ajmer Sharif Dargah, forcing her to convert to Islam, and deceptively making her consume meat that violated her religious convictions. The combination of sexual exploitation, coercive religious conversion, the violation of Hindu dietary beliefs, blackmail and death threats makes this case particularly disturbing. The conduct went beyond sexual abuse to encompass coercion directed at the woman's Hindu faith, religious practices and freedom of conscience. Such incidents warrant documentation as instances of religiously motivated hostility towards Hindus. Firstly, the victim was taken to Ajmer Sharif Dargah where she was pressured to convert to Islam. This aspect of the case represented a serious violation of religious autonomy and raised grave concerns about coercion directed at a woman's existing religious identity. Faith is not something that another person has the right to dictate, manipulate or attempt to replace through pressure. For Hindus, religious identity encompasses spiritual beliefs, family traditions, cultural inheritance and a deeply personal connection to their faith. Pressuring a Hindu woman to abandon that identity and embrace another religion struck at her freedom of conscience and her right to preserve her religious heritage. The connection between the visit to Ajmer Sharif Dargah and the pressure to convert made religious coercion a central religious marker in the case. Rather than respecting her right to determine her own beliefs, the conduct involved pressure to change her religious affiliation against her wishes. Such behaviour constituted a serious infringement of religious freedom and dignity. The incident warranted scrutiny because coercion to abandon Hindu faith represented an attack on an individual's right to retain and practise her religion without interference. Secondly, the woman was deceptively made to consume meat that was considered religiously prohibited. This aspect added another deeply troubling dimension to the complaint because it concerned violation of her personal dietary convictions and religious boundaries. Within Hinduism, vegetarianism has long been regarded by many Hindus as an expression of ahimsa (non-violence), compassion towards living beings, spiritual discipline and respect for life. Many Hindu communities and devotees abstain from meat, while some observe strict dietary restrictions as an integral part of their religious practice and personal commitment to their faith. In this case, where the Hindu woman abstained from consuming meat on religious grounds, deceiving her into consuming it represented a direct disregard for her beliefs and personal conscience. The gravity of the conduct lay in the removal of her ability to make an informed decision about what she consumed, thereby undermining her autonomy over a matter connected to her religious convictions. A person's faith and dietary observances are not trivial preferences to be manipulated or disregarded at another's discretion. When considered alongside the pressure to convert to Islam, the incident raised a serious concern that the woman's religious boundaries had been violated in more than one way. Being deceived into consuming food she regarded as prohibited was a deeply distressing intrusion into her personal beliefs and an attack on her Hindu identity. The fact that the woman continued to face sexual exploitation, blackmail, mistreatment and harassment after she visited Ajmer Sharif Dargah, where she was pressured to convert to Islam, demonstrated that the abuse extended beyond sexual violence to coercion involving her religious identity. The combination of pressure to abandon her faith, the violation of her dietary convictions and the continued exploitation and intimidation warranted scrutiny as an instance of religiously motivated targeting of a Hindu woman. The conduct represented not merely an assault on her bodily autonomy but also a grave violation of her freedom of conscience and right to preserve her religious identity. Accordingly, this case has been documented in the Hinduphobia Tracker's Hate Crime Database as an instance of religiously motivated hostility directed against Hinduism and the religious identity of the Hindu community.
