Case Summary

An Instagram account named Kuntabaudh circulated a video mocking Hindu Gods and Goddesses through profane and sexually degrading language. The video featured a woman wearing a bindi and sindoor who made derogatory remarks about the Hindu deities and followed them with a provocative challenge invoking the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act (SC/ST Act). In the video, while referring to B. R. Ambedkar, the woman said, “Hamare baap mein dum tha isliye tumhare 33 crore devi-devtaon ki nasbandi kar di,” which translates to, “Our father had the guts, which is why he had your 33 crore gods and goddesses sterilised.” The word nasbandi, meaning sterilisation, was used as a vulgar and sexually degrading insult directed at Hindu deities. The statement invoked Ambedkar and the Constitution to suggest that Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes had gained special legal protections and status, while Hindus belonging to the general category did not enjoy comparable reservation-based benefits. The woman then added, “Agar tum mein dum hai to hata ke dikhao SC/ST Act,” meaning, “If you have the guts, then get the SC/ST Act repealed and show us.” This statement challenged the audience to seek the law's removal, shifting from derogatory remarks about Hindu deities to a confrontational challenge about legal protections. The incident came to light after the video went viral. The Hinduphobia Tracker team investigated the Instagram account and found that Kuntabaudh had 296 posts and approximately 17,700 followers. The account also published several videos about the Bhim Army and related topics.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case is being added to the tracker under the primary category: Hate Speech against Hindus. The subcategory selected is: Anti-Hindu slurs, mocking faith. Anti-Hindu slurs and the deliberate mocking of the Hindu faith owing to religious animosity involve the usage of derogatory terms, stereotypes, or offensive references to religious practices, symbols, or figures. One of the common anti-Hindu slurs used against Hindus is “cow-worshipper” and “cow piss drinker”. The intention of using this term is to demean and mock Hindus as a group and their religious beliefs since Hindus consider the cow holy. Additionally, some symbols and the slurs attached to them have a historical context that exacerbates the insult, hate, stereotyping, dehumanisation and oppression against Hindus. Cow worship has been used for centuries to denigrate Hindus, insult their faith and oppress Hindus specifically as a religious group. There has been overwhelming documentation about how cow slaughter has been used to persecute Hindus with cow meat being thrown in temples and places of worship. There has also been overwhelming documentation where cow meat (beef) has been force-fed to Hindus to either forcefully convert them to Islam or denigrate their faith. Apart from cow worship, the Swastika – which holds deep religious significance for the Hindus – has also been misinterpreted and distorted to use as a slur against Hindus. Similarly, the worship of the Shivling has been used by supremacist ideologies and religions to denigrate Hindus owing to religious animosity. Such slurs and denigration stem out of inherent animosity and hate towards Hindus and their faith, therefore, it is categorised as hate speech targeted at Hindus specifically owing to their religious identity. The hate crime aspect in this case stemmed from the deliberate use of sexually degrading language to insult Hindu Gods and Goddesses. For Hindus, these deities are sacred objects of devotion and hold profound spiritual significance. Using obscene references to demean them attacks the religious sentiments of devotees and expresses contempt for beliefs central to Hindu religious identity. The invocation of B. R. Ambedkar and constitutional protections for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes did not justify insulting Hindu deities. The right to advocate for constitutional protections, defend one's social status, or criticise reservation policies does not require denigrating another community's faith. Mocking Hindu Gods and Goddesses is no way to assert special status or advance a constitutional argument. The woman could have expressed her views on social and legal issues without resorting to sexually degrading language against figures revered by Hindus. Her choice to use such language turned a policy-related argument into a direct insult to Hindu religious sentiments. Social media content that uses vulgarity and sexualised insults against Hindu deities contributes to the normalisation of contempt towards Hindu beliefs. Such conduct goes beyond disagreement or criticism by deliberately humiliating sacred figures. The targeted denigration of Hindu deities on account of their religious significance establishes the basis for recording this incident under the category of hate speech against Hindus.
