Religious decorations, saffron flags and lights placed around temple vandalised by unknown miscreants in Siwan, Bihar
Case Summary
In Mahpur Khajrauni village, under Hussain Ganj police station in Siwan district, Bihar, religious decorations, saffron flags and lights that were placed around a temple were destroyed by unknown miscreants. At around 4 am on 15 October 2025, villagers discovered the damage and informed other residents. As news spread, many people gathered at the site. Angered youths set fire to items on the road, blocked the Siwan–Andar main road and began protesting. The road blockade began around 5 am and continued until 9 am, leaving long queues of vehicles on both sides. During the four-hour blockade, dozens of school vehicles carrying hundreds of children remained stranded in traffic. The children and their escorts faced difficulties due to the prolonged disruption. Commuters travelling for work and other purposes also experienced inconvenience. After receiving information about the incident and the road blockade, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Sadar, was informed. Police personnel from Andar, M.H. Nagar, Hasanpura and Hussain Ganj police stations arrived at the scene. The officers inspected the site and spoke to the protesting villagers. After considerable persuasion, the protesters calmed down, normality was restored, and the road blockade was lifted. The identities of those responsible for damaging the temple’s decorations, flags and lights, as well as the reasons behind the incident, remained unknown. The police continued investigating the case. Hussain Ganj police station in-charge Mohan Prasad said villagers blocked the road and that they brought the situation under control after persuading them to end the protest. He confirmed that the investigation into the incident was ongoing.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
This case is being added to the Undecided database of Hinduphobia Tracker because the details currently available do not establish that the crime was motivated by religious animosity towards Hindus or their faith. In this case, the destruction of religious decorations, flags and lights near a sacred Hindu temple raised questions about whether the act was intended to hurt Hindu religious sentiments or was motivated by hostility towards the faith. To understand the religious significance of such an incident, it is important to recognise the role of temples and their surrounding religious symbols in Hinduism. For Hindus, temples are sacred spaces dedicated to the worship of deities, while flags, decorative arrangements and lights form part of religious observances and expressions of devotion. These elements contribute to the spiritual atmosphere of a place of worship and hold significance for devotees and the wider Hindu community. Their deliberate destruction therefore affects objects and symbols associated with religious reverence and can cause distress among Hindu worshippers. However, the motive behind this particular incident remained undetermined, and the police investigation was ongoing. The incident could have been motivated by personal disputes, vandalism or other non-religious reasons, as the perpetrators’ identities and motives had not yet been established. While this does not in any way excuse the deliberate destruction of religious decorations, flags and lights associated with a Hindu temple or lessen the religious hurt caused by the act, the available case details do not provide sufficient evidence to conclusively establish that the offence was specifically driven by anti-Hindu hostility. Therefore, despite the serious damage and the legitimate suspicion raised by such an act, the perpetrator's motive cannot currently be classified as religiously motivated. Hinduphobia Tracker applies strict parameters before classifying an incident as a religiously motivated hate crime. Since the available evidence does not establish that the vandalism was driven by hostility towards Hinduism or the Hindu community, this case does not currently meet the criteria for such a classification. It is therefore being added to the Hinduphobia Tracker's Undecided database. If further information emerges demonstrating that religious hostility towards Hinduism or Hindus was a motivating factor behind the act, the case will be reassessed and subsequently added to the hate crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker.
