Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is: Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory selected is: Desecration of Hindu religious symbol. Icons and symbols or a religious representation of a spiritual ideal are widely revered in Hinduism. Iconography is of vital significance in the Hindu milieu. It helps connect people’s spiritual beliefs with the real world. Iconography within the Hindu faith takes several shapes and forms. Murtis are of most significance to Hindus, to which daily rituals, prayers and offerings are done. Besides the murtis, there are several other symbols which have deep significance in the Hindu faith – the Om and Swastika for example. Since these Hindu religious symbols hold paramount importance in Hinduism, any desecration of symbols, icons, murtis, religious representations and manifestations, is driven by animosity towards the faith itself which manifests itself through these murtis, icons and symbols. Therefore, any desecration of these Hindu religious symbols and representations is considered religiously motivated hate crimes under this category. This incident constituted a religiously motivated hate crime because the perpetrators specifically targeted a sacred Hindu deity and the religious practices surrounding its worship during Navratri. The ancient idol of Goddess Kali was removed from the temple, thrown outside and desecrated, constituting an act against the religious sentiments and worship practices of the Hindu community. In Hinduism, idols serve as sacred representations of deities and give devotees a tangible focus for worship, through which they offer prayers, perform rituals, and express devotion. They are consecrated, worshipped and incorporated into the ritual life of temples and religious ceremonies. Moreover, Goddess Kali is a revered Hindu deity associated with power, protection, the destruction of evil and the triumph of good over negative forces. She holds profound religious significance for Hindu devotees, who worship her as a divine mother and protector against evil. Her idols are central to temple worship and religious festivals, including Navratri, and serve as sacred representations of faith and spiritual devotion. The desecration of the idol of Goddess Kali constituted an act against Hindu religious sentiments and the sanctity of Hindu worship. The removal of the idol from the temple, its being thrown outside, and the damage inflicted upon it violated the reverence associated with Hindu religious practices and the sacred spaces in which devotees worshipped. The act disrupted the sanctity of the temple and offended the faith and devotional sentiments of Hindu worshippers, particularly during Navratri, a period dedicated to the worship of the Divine Feminine. By damaging a sacred representation of a Hindu deity, the perpetrators undermined the religious dignity of the Hindu community and showed disregard for its beliefs, traditions and right to practise its faith without interference. It is important to mention here that, though the last update stated that the miscreants were unknown, regardless, the action stemmed from hatred against Hinduism and resulted in the desecration of the sacred temple and would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. Accordingly, this case has been documented in the Hinduphobia Tracker's Hate Crime Database as an instance of religiously motivated hostility directed against Hinduism and the religious identity of the Hindu community.
