Case Summary

In Tando Allahyar, Sindh province, Pakistan, a minor Hindu boy was brutally assaulted and abused by a Muslim shopkeeper. A video of the incident went viral on social media after it was posted by the X handle ‘Pakistan Untold’, which regularly reports on crimes against Hindus in Pakistan. The post stated that the boy was beaten by a Muslim man merely for selling fruits near his shop. In the video, the victim’s father was seen crying alongside his son, who had been beaten. Pointing towards the shop, he stated that the Muslim shopkeeper had beaten his son merely for standing on the road near his shop. He further stated that his son had simply been standing near the road when the shopkeeper attacked and abused him. The victim’s father was seen crying as he questioned why his son had been attacked when he had done nothing wrong. He asked whether being Hindu was their only crime and lamented that Hindus were attacked and killed without reason in Pakistan. He asked, “Is being Hindu a crime? Are we not human beings?” while repeatedly raising these questions before the people gathered around him. This case highlights the persecution faced by the Hindu minorities in Pakistan, marked by systemic discrimination, violence, and forced conversions. Hindu women, particularly young girls, are often abducted, forcibly converted to Islam, and married off to Muslim men with little to no legal recourse. Temples are frequently vandalised or destroyed, and Hindu communities are subjected to social and economic marginalisation. Blasphemy laws are disproportionately used against Hindus, leading to false accusations and severe punishments. Many Hindu families are forced to flee their homes due to religious intolerance, living in constant fear of attacks. This sustained persecution highlights the dire conditions for Hindus in Pakistan, where their religious identity makes them targets of oppression.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case was added to the Undecided database of the Hinduphobia Tracker due to a lack of conclusive information establishing the religious motive behind the crime. In this case, a Hindu boy was beaten by a Muslim shopkeeper for merely standing near his shop on a road in Pakistan. Given the religious identities of the victim and perpetrator, the incident raised concerns that the boy may have been targeted because of his Hindu faith. Such concerns were further heightened by Pakistan’s documented history of persecution of Hindus, including attacks, killings and forced conversions targeting the community on religious grounds. In this broader context, the circumstances of the incident raised suspicion that the assault may have been motivated by religious hostility. The victim’s father was also seen crying and questioning why his son had been attacked, asking whether their only crime was being Hindu and whether they were not human beings. His repeated reference to their Hindu identity while speaking about the assault raised further suspicion that the boy may have been targeted because of his faith. The fact that the victim’s religious identity was specifically invoked by his father while describing the attack therefore added to the possibility of a religious motive behind the crime. Between 1 January 2023 and 8 October 2026, the Hinduphobia Tracker documented a total of 199 cases in Pakistan in which Hindus were targeted or attacked. Of these, 175 were classified as definitive hate-crime cases rooted in religious hostility, while 24 remained in the Undecided category due to insufficient evidence establishing a religious motive beyond reasonable doubt. This dataset is not exhaustive, as access to media reports and information from Pakistan remains severely limited due to government restrictions and other constraints on reporting. Despite these limitations, the Hinduphobia Tracker has documented 199 such cases, indicating that the actual number of attacks targeting Hindus is significantly higher than the cases currently recorded. This broader pattern also raises the question of whether the present incident was rooted in hostility towards the victim’s Hindu identity. However, despite these circumstances, it could not be established beyond reasonable doubt at the time of documentation that the boy was specifically targeted because he was a Hindu. It remained possible that the incident was a crime of opportunity or a non-religious dispute in which the shopkeeper objected to the boy selling fruits or standing near his shop. There was no information available at the time of documentation indicating that the perpetrator had used religious slurs or explicitly stated that he was attacking the boy because of his Hindu faith. Therefore, the available evidence was insufficient to classify the incident as a hate crime. The Hinduphobia Tracker follows strict parameters for classifying incidents as hate crimes and documents a case as such only when there is sufficient evidence of a clear and specific religious motive. In the present case, such a motive was not conclusively established at the time of documentation. Hence, the case remained in the Undecided database. If further information emerges establishing that the victim was targeted because of his Hindu faith, the case will be reassessed and will be moved to the hate-crime database of the Hinduphobia Tracker. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incident dates based on when a crime occurred rather than when it was reported by mainstream media or when information about it went viral on social media. However, in the present case, there was no available information establishing when the incident actually occurred, as the video was undated. Therefore, 29 September 2026, the date on which the video was posted by Pakistan Untold, was selected as an indicative incident date for documentation purposes only.
