Case Summary

A Hindu medical student was lured and pressured to convert to Islam as a precondition for marriage by a fellow medical student, a Muslim youth identified as Mohammed Rayeed Qadri. He sexually exploited her, threatening to circulate her private photographs and videos on social media when she refused. The Hinduphobia Tracker contacted Alipiri Police Station in Tirupati and confirmed that the woman was Hindu. The Hindu woman, from Akkarampalli in Tirupati, was studying MBBS at a medical college in Georgia, where she came into contact with the accused, Mohammed Rayeed Qadri (24), who was a fellow student. The two subsequently entered into a relationship, and Rayeed established a physical relationship with her after assuring her that he would marry her. In September 2026, Raeed came to Tirupati and stayed at a hotel for about a week, during which he met the victim. When she subsequently sought clarity about marriage, he demanded that she convert to his religion as a condition for marrying her. He also threatened to circulate her private photographs and videos on social media and share them with her relatives when she refused. Subsequently, the victim approached Alipiri Police in Tirupati and lodged a complaint. Police registered a case and launched an investigation. Acting on the directions of Tirupati Superintendent of Police L. Subbarayudu, an Alipiri Police team led by Circle Inspector Ram Kishore traced Rayeed to his residence in Akbar Bagh, Malakpet, Hyderabad. On October 1, 2026, police arrested Rayeed in Hyderabad and brought him to Tirupati. His phone was seized for forensic examination, along with other technical evidence connected with the case. Police subsequently produced him before a local court, where he was sent to remand. Investigators continued examining the digital evidence recovered during the investigation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. The subcategory selected is: Forced conversion before marriage. In such cases, a non-Hindu man is in a relationship with a Hindu woman when the pressure to convert her religion begins to manifest. In such cases, typically, two patterns emerge. First, when the relationship is consensual, and the religious identity of the perpetrator is known to the Hindu woman in the relationship, at some point during the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts to force the victim to convert her religion and give up her Hindu religious identity. The second is when the woman gets into a marriage with the man pretending to share her faith. Later, when the truth is revealed, the man starts pressuring the woman to convert her religion and give up her religious identity. In both situations, the methods used to force the victim to convert her religion often revolve around force-feeding beef, forcing her to wear hijab, forcing her to read the Kalma or even pressuring the victim to do ‘Nikah’, which is marriage under Islamic law, with a prerequisite being conversion to Islam. Cases where a Hindu woman consensually converts to Islam in a relationship will be left out of the hate crime database, even though it could be argued in several cases that the conversion was a result of religious brainwashing. The other subcategory selected is: Blackmailed to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman is blackmailed to convert her religion, owing to her religious identity as a Hindu. Such relationships may be consensual, with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim; however, there could be cases where the relationship is not consensual, and the non-Hindu man starts blackmailing a Hindu woman to convert her religion. In these cases, it is often seen that the Hindu woman is blackmailed with intimate photos and/or videos, threats of harm to her or her family, threats of violence, etc. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and are against the religious identity of the victim, and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The other sub-category selected here is - Assault or threat upon refusal to convert. When Hindu women are in a relationship with non-Hindu men, there are cases where the woman faces threats or assault after she refuses to convert and change her religious identity owing to pressure/force by the non-Hindu man. Such relationships may be consensual with the religious identity of the non-Hindu man known to the victim. Somewhere along the relationship, the non-Hindu man starts pressurizing the Hindu woman to convert to Islam and upon her refusal, assaults or threatens the victim. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. Cases where the Hindu woman converts to Islam and does not file a complaint about the force or threat, are not considered a part of the hate tracker, even though, it may be argued that the woman was brainwashed or threatened to convert to Islam. This case was classified as a religiously motivated hate crime because a Hindu woman was specifically targeted for pressure to convert to Islam by a Muslim man. More importantly, the perpetrator made conversion a condition for marrying the victim and threatened to circulate her intimate photographs and videos if she refused. His demand for religious conversion, coupled with the threat of intimate-image blackmail, therefore made the religious motive explicit: the victim was Hindu, while conversion to Islam was the intended outcome of the coercion. A central aspect of the coercion was the demand that the Hindu woman convert to Islam as a condition for marriage. The sexual relationship had taken place earlier on the promise that he would marry her, while no conversion was mentioned or imposed as a condition at that stage. The later demand for conversion therefore fundamentally changed the terms of the marriage that had been promised. The assurance of marriage had already been used to establish the intimate relationship, while the demand to abandon Hinduism emerged when she later sought to hold him to that promise. Marriage was consequently presented as available only on the condition that she relinquish her Hindu faith and adopt Islam. This sequence transformed the promise of marriage into an instrument of religious coercion: the relationship had been established on one understanding, but when the victim sought marriage, she was confronted with a demand to surrender her religious identity as the price of fulfilling the promise. The fact that conversion was introduced only after the intimate relationship had occurred further underscores the deceptive and coercive character of the conduct documented in this case. Furthermore, pressuring a Hindu individual to discard her religious faith and embrace another was a direct attack on her religious identity and dignity. It was not a matter of personal choice; it was coercion rooted in hostility towards the victim's Hindu identity. Such an attempt reflects religious animosity because the act was not simply about personal differences but about erasing the victim’s Hindu faith, making it a religiously motivated crime. Compounding this religious pressure was the threat to publish her intimate photographs and videos and disclose them to her relatives when she refused to convert. The private material was used as leverage against her at the point when she resisted changing her religion. This connected the threatened personal humiliation and exposure directly to her refusal to give up her Hindu faith. The significance for her Hindu identity therefore lay in the fact that the threatened consequences were presented as the means of compelling compliance with a demand for religious conversion. The pressure did not merely concern whether she would continue the relationship; it was tied specifically to whether she would abandon her Hindu religious identity and convert to Islam. Taken together, these elements constituted hostility directed at her continued adherence to Hinduism and sought to undermine her religious identity through coercion. Such actions stem from inherent hostility towards the victim's professed faith since Abrahamic faiths believe that any non-adherent to the faith is subject to being dehumanised till they convert. Such acts were not merely personal crimes; they were rooted in a desire to dominate and erase the religious identity of the victim. Since such predatory actions stem from doctrinal animosity towards the Hindu faith and its adherents, this case is being documented as a religiously motivated hate crime.
