Case Summary

In Richmond Heights, Ohio, a Hindu temple was attacked with bricks; its windows were shattered, and its property was damaged while priests and devotees were inside engaged in worship. The attack targeted the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir in the Greater Cleveland area. The incident took place at around 1:30 pm on 2 October 2026, when bricks were thrown at the temple. Priests and devotees were inside the premises and engaged in worship at the time, although no injuries were reported. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) said that surveillance footage of the attack was available and was being reviewed by authorities. HAF remained in contact with the temple leaders and offered assistance. The organisation also alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and civil rights authorities about the incident. HAF expressed concern about what it described as unprecedented hate and vitriol directed towards the Hindu American community. It called for those responsible to be identified and arrested and urged elected representatives and government agencies in the United States to publicly condemn hateful rhetoric directed towards Indian American and Hindu American communities. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) called on Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas and Richmond Heights municipal authorities to publicly condemn the incident. It also urged Richmond Heights Police to take swift action against those responsible. No suspect had been publicly identified, and no arrest had been confirmed at the time of writing this report. CoHNA also referred to previous incidents involving Hindu temples and religious sites in the United States. In August 2022, a Mahatma Gandhi statue at Shri Tulsi Mandir in Queens, New York, was vandalised. In December 2023, hateful graffiti was reported at the SMVS Shri Swaminarayan Temple in Newark, California. Similar incidents involving Hindu temples and religious sites in the United States had also been documented. In December 2023, hateful graffiti was reported at the SMVS Shri Swaminarayan Temple in Newark, California. In September 2024, BAPS temples in Melville, New York, and the Sacramento area of California were vandalised. In March 2025, a BAPS temple in Chino Hills, California, was defaced with messages targeting the Hindu community.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

The primary category selected in this case is: Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory selected is: Attack on Temples. In Hinduism, a temple is the abode of the Deity. The Deity in the Temple is consecrated, thereby, making it a real, breathing entity. Hindus believe that not just the Deity but the temple premises itself are sacred to Hindus since Hindus hold the faith that the entire Temple space is an amalgamation of the divine energy of the deity. Given the central significance of Temples in Hindu Dharma, any attack against a Hindu Temple or its peripheral premises is an attack on the faith itself and is born out of animosity towards the faith, of which, the Temple is a central tenet. Any manner of attack against a Temple and/or its premises would therefore be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This case has been added to the tracker as the perpetrators deliberately targeted a Hindu temple, damaging its windows and property while priests and devotees were inside, demonstrating hostility towards a Hindu religious space. A temple holds immense spiritual importance in the Hindu faith. For Hindus, temples are not merely physical structures but sanctified spaces that embody the divine presence of Hindu deities. Acts of violence against such spaces therefore extend beyond physical damage and can reflect hostility towards Hindu beliefs and identity. The most significant religious marker was the deliberate targeting of the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu Mandir itself. The site is a consecrated Hindu place of worship associated with the Swaminarayan tradition, rather than an ordinary public or commercial property. A Hindu temple holds profound spiritual significance for Hindus and serves as a place of prayer, worship, religious instruction, festivals and communal gatherings. The damage therefore affected a sacred space through which Hindu religious life is practised and expressed. Targeting such a place of worship constitutes an attack on a site that is intrinsically connected to Hindu religious identity and devotion. For Hindus, the sanctity of a temple extends beyond its physical structure. It provides a dedicated space for devotion, religious observance, community fellowship and engagement with the divine. Consequently, deliberate violence directed at a Hindu temple is not simply damage to property, but an affront to a space that embodies and safeguards Hindu faith and collective religious identity. When a sacred institution is singled out for attack, the harm reaches beyond the immediate physical damage because it undermines the sense of security and reverence associated with practising Hinduism within its own religious spaces. Another clear religious marker was the presence of priests and devotees inside the temple when the attack took place. Hindu temples serve as dedicated spaces for prayer, worship and religious observance, making the presence of worshippers and religious personnel particularly significant in assessing the nature of the attack. The throwing of bricks at the temple while members of the Hindu community were present therefore disrupted an environment of religious observance and exposed those gathered there to danger while they were practising their faith. Priests facilitate religious rituals and observances, while devotees gather to offer prayers, seek blessings and participate in communal worship. Targeting the temple in these circumstances therefore intruded directly upon the community's exercise of its religion and threatened the sense of safety associated with worshipping in a sacred Hindu space. The incident consequently extended beyond physical damage to property, as the attack occurred within a setting dedicated specifically to the practice and expression of Hinduism. Collectively, the deliberate targeting of a Hindu temple and the disruption of worship placed the incident within a distinctly Hindu religious context. These elements affected a sacred institution, active religious observance and a period of heightened Hindu religious identity and communal participation, giving the incident significance beyond ordinary property damage and demonstrating hostility towards a Hindu religious space and the faith practised within it. Accordingly, this case has been documented in the Hinduphobia Tracker's Hate Crime Database as an instance of religiously motivated hostility directed against Hinduism and the religious identity of the Hindu community.
