Case Summary

In Madannapet, Hyderabad, a Ganesh idol immersion procession and Annadanam event (a sacred religious feast) were defiled when three Muslim residents threw meat pieces from the 7th floor of an apartment building. The police described the incident as communal and stated that the meat thrown resembled beef. The incident occurred at around 3 pm on Sunday, 20 September 2026, at the Double Bedroom Housing Society near Chanchalguda X Roads. Hindu residents of the housing complex, along with members of the Ambedkar Association, had organised Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, including the Ganesh immersion programme and Annadanam. As devotees were being served lunch, a packet containing bones and non-vegetarian food waste was thrown from an upper floor towards the area where the religious event was taking place. According to a complaint filed by Pilli Prasad, a resident of the housing society and one of the Ganesh Mandapam organisers, Mohammed Imran Qureshi, a resident of B Block, along with other residents, threw the meat waste from the building, disturbing the religious programme. Police officers reached the spot after being alerted and detained three Muslim residents, Mohammed Imran Qureshi, Arshiya Begum and Sameena, for questioning. Madannapet police registered a case under Sections 196(2) and 299 read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, concerning the promotion of enmity between communities and deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings. The police stated that stringent legal action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation. The nature of the meat remained under investigation. Charminar Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police Kiran Khare described the material as non-vegetarian waste resembling beef, while the complaint referred to it as meat waste. A Madannapet police official said the material appeared to be a dry meat bone and that a sample had been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to determine its nature. Police said the type of meat could not be confirmed until the Forensic Science Laboratory report was received. The incident triggered protests by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and members of Hindu organisations in Chanchalguda, who demanded stringent action over the incident. Police deployed additional personnel, including Rapid Action Force personnel, in the area as a precaution and intervened to prevent the situation from escalating. The situation was subsequently brought under control and remained peaceful. Deputy Commissioner of Police Kiran Khare appealed to residents not to circulate rumours or unverified information about the incident on social media and urged people to maintain peace and communal harmony. Police continued examining the circumstances inside the apartment and the sequence of events leading to the meat being thrown, with further legal action to follow based on the evidence collected.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category: Attack on Hindu religious representations. The subcategory selected is: Defiling religious customs. Sanatan Dharma is not a religion of one book, which is to say that while it has religious scriptures that form the central tenets of the faith, there are several traditions followed through thousands of years, mostly passed from generation to generation orally. There are several such customs and traditions that are followed by various Hindus and Hindu sects. Defiling of these traditions and customs is a breach of an individual or group’s religious practices. Such practices can range from dietary restrictions like not eating non-vegetarian food for a certain period of the year, not eating non-vegetarian food at all, not eating beef since the cow is considered holy in Hinduism, the sanctity of religious customs followed in the house (like many ISCKON devotees), etc. Any malicious action leading to the breach of such traditions or defilement of these traditions owing to animosity towards the faith or for the sake of activism stems not only from the lack of faith in the religion itself but also from disregard for the faith of the devotees who follow the customs/traditions and implicit bias against the faith, the tradition itself. Since these specific traditions are central to the faith of the devotees of that specific sect of Hindus, any non-compliance with these traditional rules would be considered a religiously motivated hate crime. This case was an example of a religiously targeted act because Muslim residents threw pieces of meat and bones towards the location where a Ganesh idol immersion procession and Annadanam were taking place during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. The conduct occurred directly within the setting of a Hindu religious observance and involved material that was inappropriate to the sacred setting in which devotees were worshipping Lord Ganesha and participating in the religious programme. Ganesh Chaturthi is a major Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of Lord Ganesha, who is revered as the remover of obstacles and the deity of wisdom and prosperity. During the festival, devotees install and worship Ganesh idols through prayers, rituals and offerings, with the idol serving as the central focus of the religious observance. The Ganesh idol immersion procession holds particular significance as it marks the ceremonial conclusion of the period of worship, with devotees carrying the worshipped deity in a religious procession before ceremonially immersing the idol in water. Annadanam, the practice of offering and distributing food, is also an important Hindu religious practice associated with seva, devotion, charity and service to devotees. It forms an integral part of such religious gatherings by providing food to devotees as an act of religious offering and worship. The Ganesha idol, immersion procession and Annadanam therefore form interconnected elements of the religious observance of Ganesh Chaturthi, rather than merely cultural or public activities. The throwing of meat pieces and bones towards the Ganesh idol immersion procession and Annadanam directly intruded upon a Hindu religious observance. Meat and animal remains are considered impure and unsuitable in Hindu worship and are therefore kept away from sacred spaces and religious rituals. Throwing them towards devotees gathered for the ceremonial immersion of Lord Ganesha and the distribution of Annadanam therefore served to defile the sacred setting and disrupt the religious observance. The meat and bones were directed specifically towards a Hindu religious gathering rather than discarded elsewhere, indicating deliberate provocation and disregard for Hindu religious sentiments. By introducing substances considered impure into the midst of the religious proceedings, the perpetrators desecrated the sanctity of the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations as a whole and demonstrated their hostility towards Hinduism and the Hindu community. The seriousness of the incident was further heightened by the police stating that the meat thrown resembled beef, although its exact nature remained subject to forensic examination. The cow holds a particularly sacred position in Hindu religious tradition and is revered for its association with nourishment, motherhood, fertility and religious sanctity. This reverence is also reflected in Vedic texts, where the cow is described as "Aghnya", meaning “not to be killed” or “not to be slain”. The cow's sacred status therefore places its slaughter and the presence of its remains in a distinctly different religious context from ordinary meat. If the material thrown was confirmed as beef, introducing the remains of a sacred animal into the midst of a Hindu religious procession and gathering would have crossed a significant religious boundary and constituted a grave form of religious provocation. Throwing such material towards devotees participating in the Ganesh idol immersion procession would consequently have the effect of desecrating the sanctity of the religious observance and further offending Hindu religious sentiments. The circumstances left little basis for treating the incident as an accidental disposal of food waste or an unrelated act of public disorder. The meat was thrown towards the precise location where Hindu devotees had gathered for the Ganesh idol immersion procession and Annadanam during a major Hindu festival, and the police themselves treated the incident as communal. The deliberate targeting of the religious gathering, coupled with the nature of the material thrown and the police's observation that it resembled beef, demonstrated a serious disregard for Hindu religious sentiments and hostility towards the Hindu faith and community. The act sought to disrupt and desecrate a sacred Hindu observance and therefore met the parameters for inclusion as a religiously targeted hate crime in the Hinduphobia Tracker's hate crime database.
