Hindu temple targeted, Lord Ram idol mutilated and desecrated by unknown miscreants in Basti, Uttar Pradesh

Case Summary
In the Varah area of Gaur police station in Basti district, Uttar Pradesh, the idol of Lord Shri Ram at a temple was vandalised, desecrated and mutilated by some unknown miscreants. It was a place of pilgrimage where devotees came from far and wide to visit. The site was their shrine, religion and place of faith. He added that someone came to the site and broke the hands of the idol of Lord Shri Ram. He said that the first hand had been broken a couple of days earlier and that the second hand was broken the same day. He called for action against whoever had carried out the act and said that the matter should be looked into and investigated to determine who had done it and who came to the site. He further stated that playing with their faith and breaking the idol of their God would not be tolerated by the people there. The police spoke with the villagers and appealed to them to maintain peace and law and order. As there was a possibility of tension developing in the area after the incident, police activity was increased, and police personnel were deployed at the site as a precautionary measure. The situation at the spot remained peaceful. Gaur police station in-charge Atul Kumar Anjaan stated that another idol would soon be brought and installed in place of the mutilated idol. The police gathered information about the incident and continued their investigation. In the case concerning the mutilation and breaking of the Lord Shri Ram idol in Varah Kshetra under Tinich outpost, the police registered a case against unknown persons. Atul Kumar Anjaan stated that suspected persons were being identified and searched for. The Lord Shri Ram idol in Varah Kshetra had undergone Pran Pratishtha around five years earlier. The reports stated that anti-social elements mutilated and damaged the idol in an attempt to spoil the atmosphere of the area. After learning about the incident, former district panchayat member Ram Prakash Singh, also known as Nanhe Singh, reached Varah Kshetra. He brought a new idol of Lord Shri Ram from Ayodhya to the area. In the presence of the police, arrangements were made for the installation of the new idol and for maintaining peace and law and order. The police assured local public representatives and villagers that effective action would be taken in the matter. The station in-charge also assured them that patrolling in the area would be strengthened. Following the increased police presence and other measures, the situation in Varah Kshetra remained normal.
