15-year-old Hindu girl befriended and abducted by Muslim man faking Hindu identity in Barpeta, Assam
Case Summary
A 15-year-old Hindu girl from Barpeta, Assam was befriended and abducted by a Muslim man named Kamal Uddin of Karagari village, who deliberately pretended to be a Hindu man. According to the reports, the accused, Kamal Uddin, lured the minor Hindu girl into a relationship by concealing his Muslim identity and presenting himself as a Hindu man named Kamal Das. He subsequently abducted her and took her to Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. He had also prepared an Aadhaar card bearing the name Kamal Das, further concealing his real identity. The incident came to light after the girl discovered Uddin’s real identity while she was in Uttar Pradesh. She then contacted her family and returned to Assam accompanied by Uddin’s mother. When they reached Barpeta Road railway station, police detained Uddin’s mother and rescued the girl before handing her over to her family. Uddin remained absconding and had not been arrested at the time of the report.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The incident has been added to the tracker under the primary category: Crimes against women in relationships and other sexual crimes. Within this, the subcategory selected is: Man pretends to be Hindu, and the tertiary category selected is: Name changed. When a non-Hindu man pretends to be a Hindu to deceive a Hindu woman into a relationship, the act is seen as triggered by mala fide intentions. In some cases, the woman eventually accepts the man’s original religious identity and converts after the man’s identity is revealed. These cases could be argued as cases of religious brainwashing and a result of the pressure a woman feels after getting into a relationship with a man. The woman, it can be argued, also changed her religious identity because of the stigma she believes she might face if she chooses to walk out of a deceptive relationship. However, for the purpose of documenting hate crimes, the cases in this subcategory are limited to those where there is explicit violence aimed at religious conversion against the wishes of the victim (force-feeding beef, blackmailing with intimate videos, rape on refusal to convert, etc), or if the woman herself complains of the man’s religious deception. In such cases, it is established that the deception of the non-Hindu man had a specific aim of religious conversion or targeting of the victim due to her Hindu religious identity, therefore making it a religiously motivated hate crime. This case was a clear example of a religiously motivated hate crime, as a minor Hindu girl was lured into a relationship by a Muslim man posing as a Hindu. The deliberate religious deception and abduction of a Hindu girl demonstrated the religious motivation behind the act. The perpetrator's act of deception by posing as a Hindu itself demonstrated a clear religious dimension to the targeting. By concealing his true identity, he exploited her trust, targeting her under false pretences. This indicates a premeditated intent to manipulate her based on her religious background. In cases like these, the tactic of adopting a false Hindu identity to manipulate and "ensnare" a Hindu individual is not just an act of personal betrayal but can also be interpreted as an expression of disdain or disregard for Hinduism and its customs that reflects a deeper animosity towards Hindus and their beliefs. In such instances, identity concealment is not just a deceptive tactic for personal reasons but a calculated strategy rooted in religious profiling and targeting. The accused was aware that the victim, being Hindu, would likely refuse his advances if she knew his real identity, and he circumvented this by lying, which directly points to a religiously driven intent. It is also important to note that since the victim was a minor, it heightened their vulnerability to manipulation and coercion. Minors, due to their young age and lack of maturity, are particularly vulnerable to religious exploitation. They do not have the ability to fully understand the implications of being deceived about a person's religious identity in the context of a relationship, and the Muslim perpetrator specifically targeted and exploited this vulnerability. Since this case exemplified the use of deception and manipulation to achieve religious targeting, it was a blatant act of a religiously motivated hate crime against the Hindu victims.
