Case Summary

In Jaipur, Rajasthan, a group of Hindu Kanak Dandwat pilgrims were physically assaulted and seriously injured by a man named Failiram and his associates while undertaking a religious journey. The incident took place at Prempura on the Kota-Kanpuria road, within the jurisdiction of the Tunga police station, on Friday morning, August 14, 2026. The Hindu pilgrims, including Rajesh Gurjar, Kapil Gurjar, Ajit Gurjar, Hariom Sharma, and Pankaj Jangid, were travelling from Kolyavas to Nainath. At around 7:00 am, an altercation broke out after a speeding Magic tempo drove over a coconut belonging to the pilgrims. Following the argument, Failiram and a group of five to ten youths attacked the pilgrims. While one report stated that five pilgrims were physically assaulted, another mentioned that three to four sustained injuries, with two to three suffering serious injuries in the attack. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the incident. Enraged by the violence, local villagers and other pilgrims gathered at the Bhateri intersection. They set up tents, burned tyres, and completely blocked the Dausa-Lawan highway. The road blockade halted traffic from all directions and continued for two days. Administrative and police officials, including Naib Tehsildar Vaibhav Sethi, Bassi Circle In-charge Satyapal, Bassi Assistant Commissioner of Police, and Tunga Station House Officer Sajjan Singh, reached the spot to clear the blockade and manage the situation. The incident also drew political involvement, with Bharatiya Janata Party leader Chandra Mohan Meena contacting police officials to demand prompt arrests, Indian National Congress Member of Legislative Assembly Laxman Meena calling for swift action, and former minister Kanhaiya Lal Meena visiting the protest site to speak with the villagers. Police registered a First Information Report based on the victims' complaint. Authorities detained two suspects and held discussions with an 11-member delegation. The police assured the delegation that all named accused would be arrested within seven days, after which the villagers ended their protest and cleared the road.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case is being added to the Undecided database of the Hinduphobia Tracker because, at the current stage of writing this report, the available details do not establish any definite religious motivation behind the incident. Although the victims were Hindu pilgrims and they were brutally attacked while undertaking a religious journey, the information currently available does not definitively indicate that they were targeted because of their Hindu religious identity or that the attack was motivated by hostility towards Hinduism. At the same time, the circumstances of the case do hint at possible religious hostility. The victims were undertaking a ‘Kanak Dandwat’ yatra, a physically demanding and deeply sacred Hindu practice where devotees travel to a shrine, in this case, Nainath, by repeatedly prostrating themselves on the ground. The fact that Hindu pilgrims were physically assaulted and seriously injured by a group of youths while actively participating in such a visible and revered religious procession raises the possibility that their religious identity or the religious nature of their journey played a role in the attack. The Hinduphobia Tracker has documented multiple instances where Hindu religious processions, including Kanwar Yatras and similar pilgrimages, have been targeted due to hostility towards Hindu traditions and public displays of faith. The severe escalation of violence following a seemingly minor dispute further fuels the question of whether the attack harboured a religious dimension. However, it is equally plausible, based on the information currently available, that the crime had no religious motivation and was instead a spontaneous instance of road rage or a localised dispute. The immediate trigger identified in the reports was not an ideological confrontation or a deliberate, pre-planned disruption of the pilgrimage, but rather a specific altercation that occurred after a speeding Magic tempo drove over a coconut belonging to the pilgrims. The resulting argument between the pilgrims and Failiram and his associates appears to have escalated rapidly into physical violence. Furthermore, at the time of writing, the public reports do not report any anti-Hindu slurs, destruction of religious symbols, or religiously motivated statements made by the accused during the assault. Therefore, establishing that the pilgrims were attacked specifically because they were Hindus or because of animosity toward the Kanak Dandwat yatra would not be justified based solely on the current evidence. The Hinduphobia Tracker documents cases in its hate crime database only after establishing, through available evidence, that the crime was rooted in religious hostility and that there were definite indicators of a religious motivation. In the present case, despite circumstances that raise suspicion and warrant further scrutiny, there is currently no clear or definitive evidence that religious hostility drove the attack. Hence, the case will remain in the Undecided database at this stage. If further information emerges establishing that the pilgrims were specifically targeted because of their Hindu identity, their religious procession, or any other explicitly religious reason, the case will be reassessed and subsequently added to the Hinduphobia Tracker’s hate crime database. The Hinduphobia Tracker team also sought additional information from political representatives associated with the incident. However, the information available through these efforts remained limited, and no further details sufficient to establish a definite religious motive behind the attack could be obtained. Disclaimer: The victim count has been conservatively recorded as 5 because the available reports differ on the exact number of pilgrims who were assaulted and injured. One report specifically identified five pilgrims as having been physically assaulted, while another stated that three to four pilgrims sustained injuries, including two to three who were seriously injured. In view of this discrepancy, the Tracker has retained the lower, clearly supported figure of five victims rather than estimating a higher number.
