Case Summary

A 35-year-old Hindu man from Khatunge, Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, named Balasaheb Kundalik Dhawale, died by suicide on 16 June 2026. In his dying declaration, he revealed that he was committing suicide due to the mental harassment he was facing for being closely associated with the Hindu organisation, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He consumed poison on 16 June 2026 and was taken to a hospital in Shevgaon for treatment. As his condition became critical, he was shifted to Ahilyanagar on 17 June 2026, but died while being taken to the hospital. In a video the Hindu man recorded before his death, he named three people and stated that he was being subjected to mental harassment after becoming involved in the work of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He also stated that he was facing serious financial difficulties because lakhs of rupees from a bhishi (chit fund, committee, or ROSCA (Rotating Savings and Credit Association), had not been returned to him, and that had led him to decide to end his life. Various Hindu organisations expressed anger over the incident. Sarpanch Sanjay Markad, Kiran Akolkar and Balasaheb Geete demanded that cases be registered and the persons involved be arrested, and warned of a protest if action was not taken. The case was registered on the basis of a complaint submitted by Mahesh Dhawale, Balasaheb's brother. Police subsequently began investigating the matter. Pathardi Police searched for the persons named in Dhawale's video, while the allegations made in the video were taken into consideration as part of the investigation. The Hinduphobia Tracker team tried to contact the concerned police station to obtain further information about the case. However, no response was received from the police at the time of documentation.

Why it is Hate Crime ?

This case has been added to the tracker under the primary category of - Attack resulting in death. The sub-category selected here is- Attacked for supporting/being part of perceived Hindu party/org or working for Hindu community. In several cases, Hindus are attacked specifically or tangentially for their association with parties or organizations perceived to be pro-Hindu and/or for working in favor of the Hindu community. One of the classic cases was the attack against a Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha (BJYM) worker Praveen Nettaru. Nettaru was attacked and hacked to death for his association with Hindu organizations and his work for the Hindu community. He was murdered by PFI, a terror organization that aimed to commit a genocide of Hindus, target Hindu leaders specifically, and turn India into an Islamic Nation. In such cases, it is possible that the immediate trigger for the violence is non-religious – either according to the perpetrator or the police. However, there are surrounding circumstances from which the conclusion can be reached that the victim was attacked for his association with a Hindu organization. In a similar case, Rinku Sharma was attacked by radicals. He was a member of Bajrang Dal and regularly worked for the Hindu community. While the police cited a different non-religious trigger for the attack, it is true that he was associated to a Hindu organization and the family of Rinku Sharma specifically attributed his gruesome murder to him working for Bajrang Dal and raising Jai Shree Ram slogans. Such cases are intrinsically driven by religious hate. Under this category, cases where the attack led to the death of the Hindu victim/s would be documented. In this specific case, the primary marker for the targeted persecution was the victim’s active involvement with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The perpetrators weaponised a financial dispute—specifically the deliberate withholding of funds from a scheme called Bishti as a tool to inflict severe economic and mental distress. However, as the victim explicitly established in his dying declaration, the relentless mental harassment commenced and escalated directly in response to his ideological work for the RSS. The financial ruin was not the root cause of the animosity; rather, it was the mechanism the perpetrators used to systematically break him down. Targeting an individual with deliberate financial deprivation and extreme psychological harassment because they work for a Hindu organisation is an act intrinsically driven by religious hate. The hostility directed at the victim stemmed from a deep-seated ideological intolerance towards the RSS and the broader Hindu community it represents. By driving the victim to the point of suicide, the perpetrators achieved the lethal elimination of a Hindu worker. Because the extreme harassment that resulted in his death was fundamentally motivated by animosity towards his pro-Hindu ideological affiliation, the incident firmly qualified as a religiously motivated hate crime. The victim’s identification of his RSS involvement as the basis for the harassment also distinguished the religious dimension of the case from the separate financial grievance. His association with an organisation perceived to represent Hindu interests had made his work for the Hindu community a specific point of hostility. This placed the case within the selected sub-category covering attacks against Hindus because of their association with perceived pro-Hindu organisations or their work in favour of the Hindu community. The fact that the harassment manifested through financial and psychological pressure rather than a direct physical assault did not remove the religious marker identified by the victim. The fatal outcome and the stated connection between the harassment and his RSS work therefore brought the case within relevant categories. Disclaimer: The Hinduphobia Tracker records incidents based on when an event occurred or when the victim's ordeal began, not when the case was reported. In this case, the available reports did not specify when Dhawale began his involvement with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) or when the harassment related to his RSS work began. Therefore, the date of the incident has been recorded as 16 June 2026, marking the earliest documented date of the reported ordeal.
