Case Summary
In Basti, Uttar Pradesh, a fifteen-year-old sacred idol of Goddess Durga installed inside a Hindu temple was brutally vandalised and desecrated by an unknown miscreant. He entered the shrine and vandalised it with an iron rod. The incident came to light after local residents gathered at the temple and protested against the desecration, demanding strict action against the accused. According to the complaint filed by Hemlata Gupta, an unknown man entered the nearly 15-year-old Durga Temple between 1 pm and 2 pm on 30 July, 2026. He deliberately struck the idol of Goddess Durga with an iron rod. The attack damaged the idol's crown and sword, while the accused also vandalised the interior of the temple. Following the incident, residents assembled at the temple premises and expressed their anger over the desecration. Upon receiving information, the Dial-112 police reached the spot and pacified the crowd. An officer of Purani Basti, Shashank Shekhar Rai, stated that a complaint was received in the matter. At the time of writing the report, the facts were being investigated. Further legal action would be taken based on the investigation.

Although the investigation remained ongoing at the time of writing, and the perpetrator remained unknown, the deliberate desecration of a consecrated idol inside a Hindu temple and the vandalism of the shrine itself nevertheless reflect disdain towards Hindus and their faith and constituted an attack on religious symbols and a sacred place central to Hindu faith and practice.
