In Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Hindu religious sentiments were outraged after an idol of Lord Hanuman installed near the Pasipur Canal in Margupur Pasipur village, under the Kaptanganj police station area, was found vandalised. The act of vandalism sparked anger among Hindu residents and devotees in the area. The incident came to light on the morning of 31 July 2026 at around 7:30 AM, when 40–50 local children and youths who had gone for their routine morning run near the canal noticed the damaged idol and immediately informed the villagers. As news of the vandalism spread, a large number of Hindu residents from the village and nearby areas gathered at the site. Resident Sanjay Kumar Tiwari stated that the idol appeared to have been damaged by being struck with a brick. During the inspection, police recovered a piece of brick from the spot, which forms part of the evidence being examined during the investigation. Considering the sensitivity of the incident and the outrage among Hindus, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Budhanpur, police officials, and other administrative authorities reached the site. Under administrative supervision, a new idol of Lord Hanuman was installed at the same location, and Pran Pratishtha was performed with full religious rituals and Vedic chanting, following which the situation became peaceful. Budhanpur Circle Officer Vijay Singh Gaur stated that legal proceedings have been initiated against unidentified persons. Police are collecting evidence, continuing the investigation to identify those responsible for the vandalism, and stated that law and order in the area remains normal.
