Hindu youth murdered by Muslim men for being in contact with Muslim woman on social media
Case Summary
In Rajkot, Gujarat, a 23-year-old Hindu youth, Umang Jakheliya, was murdered after being targeted for remaining in contact with the sister of a Muslim man, Mohammad Nazir, on social media. On 27 July 2026, Mohammad Nazir, along with Ghulam Hussain and a minor, lured Umang out of his house under the pretext of going out for tea. A few hours later, the accused abandoned him outside his house in a critically injured and unconscious condition before fleeing the spot. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. According to reports, on the day of the incident, Mohammad Nazir arrived at Umang's house with his associates between 2:30 PM and 3:00 PM. He told his family they were going out for tea and took him away on an Activa scooter. About two hours later, the accused left Umang bleeding, unconscious, and critically injured near his house before fleeing. His family immediately rushed him to Rajkot Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His family stated that there were severe assault marks on his body. The Police investigation found that Umang was a close friend of Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Nazir's brother, and that he frequently visited their house. During this time, Umang and Mohammad Nazir's sister came into contact through social media chats. Police stated that a dispute arising from these interactions led to the murder. The investigation further found that Mohammad Nazir runs a fish-selling business, while Ghulam Hussain sells dosas. Umang's father, Ranjit Jakheliya, stated that Umang was carrying ₹50,000 in cash and a gold chain when he left home, both of which were missing after the incident. Pradyuman Nagar Police registered a case under Sections 103(1), 61(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police arrested Mohammad Nazir and Ghulam Hussain, initiated proceedings to produce the minor before the Juvenile Justice Board, and stated that the investigation is continuing using technical evidence and other available evidence to ascertain all aspects of the case.
Why it is Hate Crime ?
The primary category for this case is: Men attacked for being associated with non-Hindu women. The subcategory for this case is: Attacked/killed for being associated with or suspicion of being associated with a Muslim woman. There have been several cases documented of Hindu men/boys being attacked specifically by Muslim groups/mobs for merely being associated or suspicion of being associated or being seen with a Muslim woman in public. In most such cases, the Hindu man is not in a relationship with the Muslim woman; however, the mob proceeds to threaten and/or assault the Hindu man for merely being associated with the Muslim woman in any capacity. The rise of such crimes stems from a particularly sinister campaign run by several Muslim ideologues and activists. The campaign claims that Hindu men are attempting to ‘lure’ Muslim women into relationships to ensure that Muslim women leave their faith and follow Hinduism. The propaganda has been spearheaded with the help of WhatsApp groups and the extensive use of social media, sans evidence of the same. In many cases, pamphlets were fabricated to lend credence to this campaign. The root of this campaign lies in the fact that several cases of sectarian crimes against Hindu women in relationships with Muslim men have been documented. In such cases, Hindu women have often been forced/pressured to convert to Islam, assaulted, threatened and even murdered owing specifically to their religious identity and their refusal to give up that religious identity to adopt Islam. To delegitimize the suffering of Hindu women when such sectarian crimes are committed against them, the theory of ‘Bhagwa Love Trap’ was floated by sections of the Muslim community. As this theory gained traction, Muslim mobs started targeting Hindu men who were seen with Muslim women. In several such cases, the Hindu man was assaulted merely for offering to drop a Muslim woman in his vehicle or being friends. The differentiating factor between such cases and legitimate cases of Hindu women being targeted while in a relationship with Muslim men is that there is no sectarian violence, and force/pressure to convert. The nature of sectarian violence against Hindu women is not about two adults in a consensual relationship, working together, studying together, or even marrying each other where religious considerations are declared. In this category of crimes, it is pertinent to remember that in none of the cases is there an element of the Hindu man masking his identity or forced religious conversion. Such cases are driven by specific religious motivations and against the religious identity of the victim and are therefore qualified as hate crimes. The sequence of events in this case indicates that the Hindu victim was targeted solely because of his association with a Muslim woman. According to the facts of the case, the accused attacked and killed the victim after objecting to his social media contact with his sister. There is nothing to suggest that the victim had committed any offence other than maintaining contact with a Muslim woman. His Hindu identity, coupled with his association with the woman, became the trigger for the violence. In Islamic jurisprudence, a Muslim woman is generally prohibited from marrying a non-Muslim man unless he embraces Islam. Consequently, relationships between Muslim women and Hindu men are often viewed as religiously impermissible and become the main point of disapproval for the family of the Muslim woman. Because of the ingrained element of religious supremacy in Islam, the perpetrator family believes that such interfaith relationships diminish the family’s ‘honour’. In this case, the inherent animosity for the Hindu religion also prompted the family of the Muslim girl to go to the extent of killing the Hindu man, making this case worthy of being documented in the tracker.
